Is Riding Cruel? A Vegan Perspective

Who cares? Vegans are out of touch with reality.

The comments are making my eyes bleed…

Scary, isn’t it?

From the comments
…" I do however only eat food of which its life had come to an end (for example sprouts, green tomatoes, or mushrooms would not be included in my diet)."…

Her greatest strengths in that video are oversimplification and sensationalism. She admits it herself (“I’m only scraping the surface”.) She’s hoping you don’t dig deeper and find rebuttals.

IMHO, anyway.

Yeah not really though. So sick of hearing vegans look sickly. So do 80% of Americans.

I would like to ask if there is vegan tattoo ink and vegan makeup…

But maybe not.

Wow. I don’t even know what to say. It’s too bad that the rebuttals go straight for the jugular: Her looks and a superlative statement that vegans are out of touch. Vegans tend to be very well educated on nutrition and the environmental footprint of their diet and lifestyle, and she looks far healthier than the majority of people out there.

I do agree with her that horseback riding is not compatible with the vegan lifestyle. I think it’s too bad that she showed examples of explicit animal cruelty, resorted to sensationalism, passed along misinformation, and used information out of context to make her point, but again, I think she is right that horseback riding and the vegan lifestyle don’t work well together.

I would love to hear rebuttals. I’m not being sarcastic. I am really curious, and it is something I have wrestled with myself.

And I’m not a vegan. Obviously.

Anybody (Vegan or Peta member) who thinks horses would be better off without jobs serving humans – is in dreamland. They might as well petition for the well being of unicorns.

I apologize for the statement about her looking sickly and the insinuation that it had to do with her being vegan. It is true that I do not know if she is dealing with a serious illness of some sort. I’ll take that back.

Yes and yes. Ironically, one brand of tattoo ink is called “Stable Color” by a company called “Workhorse Irons”.

So the video won’t load for me but I did read the blog post…she does realize that the website she mentions on her blog offers RIDING lessons, right? And if some people are opposed to ordering around a “sentient being like a puppet” (that gem is from the youtube comments), then how do they do groundwork or take their horse for walks in hand? Humans need to be the alpha for those tasks just as much as they do when riding. So that “sentient being” that weighs 10x as much as a human doesn’t severly hurt themselves or their human handler.

I am not opposed to veganism at all. I personally have been a vegetarian for 17 years and vegan for some of that time. I AM opposed to crazy masquerading as scientific fact or expertise.

If bits are so cruel, why does my horse grab the bit as soon as I hold the bridle up? If he had hands, he’d put his bridle on himself.

Stupid animal rights morons. It’s pretty sad when people look to these idiots as authorities, when they know nothing.

We should all care. Because 1% of the U.S. population are horse owners, and 2% of the U.S. population considers themselves to be vegans. So no matter how ‘out of touch’ they may be, they can beat us in the voting on any animal welfare issue, legitimate or not.

And, who else is ‘out of touch’ is us. Just look across the boards on this forum at one discipline calling another cruel, providing quotable ammunition for groups with agendas. We are our own worst enemy, just playing into the nonsense that includes this little video.

And this is why anybody that wants to own horses, or ride in leather tack, needs to support all areas of animal agriculture. We can all work together to make the industries better, but we all need to present a united front. Because I can guarantee that the Beef check off program has deeper pockets than any group that is going to be lobbying for the continued use of horses.

There are facets to every branch of animal agriculture that I don’t like, and don’t agree with, including equestrian pursuits, but overall, I support each industry’s right to existence.

Animal rights extremists are after eliminating all uses of animals by humans, our uses of horses also, with the excuse of eliminating abuse.

The strangest of all is when people have animals themselves, use animal products of all kinds, that is the idea of having animals after all, but still support animal rights extremists.
Absurd.
Like being jewish and supporting Hitler or ISIS, makes about that much sense to have and care for our animals and then support those intent on keeping us from having any animals.
Absurd.

Everyone is already working to eliminate abuse where it happens, in families, schools, churches, nursing homes and yes, where animals are abused.
That is what decent people do and with animals, is called animal welfare.

There is a huge difference between animal welfare and animal rights.

Animal welfare works to regulate what we do with animals, so there is no abuse.

Animal rights extremists want to eliminate ALL use of animals.
They use that there is abuse as a step up to do so.

People fall behind them without realizing the sleigh of hand there.
They think they are working for animal welfare, when they are being used to support the eventual elimination of all animal uses by humans, the ultimate goal of animal rights extremists.

The whole “vegan” thing became a huge joke to me when I came across vegans on a gardening forum who failed at gardening because they refused to use blood meal, bone meal, or even manure in their garden. If that’s not denial of the circle of life, I truly don’t know what it.

As an aside, I don’t think I need to be polite when it comes to people saying I’m abusive to my animals. And vegans would hate me. I keep animals at home for my own entertainment, I eat them, I wear them, I ride my horses (even when they don’t want to be ridden) and I’m not sorry.

They have to use sea kelp and compost and incorporate permaculture, wild harvesting, etc. The sea kelp is not super sustainable if it has miles to go, but there are vegan alternatives for food production.

Yes, saying you are abusive is likely unfounded, insensitive, and offensive. But I don’t agree that vegans are hateful, and her appearance (which looks healthy, IMO) has nothing to do with it. I have many, many vegan friends, and none of them has ever questioned my riding. They personally wouldn’t do it, but they also understand the vegan lifestyle can be a challenging one and is not for everyone. Tolerance.
