Is there a dog harness that is safe to leave on a dog?

The only dog harnesses I’ve seen come with warnings to use only for walks. Our big dog, who can go postal, gets so excited about going for a walk that it’s hard to get the harness on him. Prefer not to walk him in a collar.

Is there such a dog harness?

Thanks

You can teach your dog to sit calmly while he’s harnessed. My terrier used to do the same thing but he had to stand still for harnessing. It took a few months but he’s great now.

I’d say no. I got lazy once and left the (well-fitting) harness on one my dogs, crated in the car, between flyball races, and you can imagine how I felt upon returning to the car and finding her with her lower jaw caught on the harness – sitting there patiently waiting to be extracted. Ugh. Never again. Not worth the risk (to me). I agree with training your dog to sit or stand quietly while harnessing.

The good news is that, although it can be time-consuming, the effort you invest in training for quiet harnessing will pay off in all kinds of ways for a postal dog. (I have one of those, too. )

Yeah, I wouldn’t leave a harness one the dog. I guess work on the training side like the previous posts. I wish I got so excited as my dog about going on a walk!

Take out the harness. Tell your dog to sit. If your dog goes postal, put harness away. Dog will sit and look at you questioningly. Tell dog to stay. Take harness back out. Dog goes postal. Put harness away.

Repeat as needed. You could probably make some real headway if you do this a few times a day. At first harness when he’s just standing still but being wiggely. After he figures it out, ask him to sit while harnessed

I won’t even leave a collar on our dogs. Harness no way.

Same here. Everybody is naked unless they are going somewhere.

While it’s designed for dogs with mobility issues, the Help 'Em Up Harness is supposed to be okay to leave on. Their blurb:

What makes this dog harness truly unique is it’s designed to stay on your dog for extended periods of time. Unlike towels, slings or leashes that need to be rigged with each use, or ramps that have to be moved or adjusted, our harness is right at hand, whenever you need it.

I have one for my sometimes shaky old dog, and it is a very good, well-designed product. I’ve used it, but haven’t really tested leaving it on for longer than a walk.

This sounds a product suited for dogs with mobility issues… not one with “behavioral” issues

I leave my harness on present dog and left it on prior dog all day long, no problems ever. Prior dog was large, this dot is medium size. Imo harness has to be well fitted not overly loose.
