Is there a good alternative to Revolution for my cat?

I have an indoor only cat. I use the Revolution only when I travel so he doesn’t pick up fleas from any hotel room, about 2 to 4 times a year. Have been using it for about 12 years, I believe.

One time, he got a burn with a scab from it. This last time, the beginning of June, I used it. Last week I noticed a bare patch at the spot I put the Revolution. Really only noticable when he puts his head down, but it does itch (loves it when I scratch there).

What are some good alternatives to the Revolution? If it requires an Rx I will have to contact my vet about 1500 miles away and I don’t know if she will do it, but I can try.

Revolution requires a prescriptions also, just curious how your’re getting it without one?

The Advantage II worked well when I had barn cats.

I never said I got Revolution without a prescription. I buy it directly from my vet.

Topical wise Revolution is the only one that works consistently in our area (SE United States). Tons of resistance to all over the counter products. Comfortis works very well but requires you to pill your cat every 30 days. Bravecto also has a feline version but will be more expensive given its 90 days effective window.

The Seresto collars have been working extremely well for us for a few years. (The vet recommended we switch to something else this year to avoid the local flea population building up immunity, if we want them to keep working.)

The collars don’t require a prescription, you can get them on Amazon.

Seconding the seresto collar. They really do work very well.

Yikes. I just checked out the price of the Seresto collar. Over $50. It would be something I only use for a couple of days driving up north and then driving back down south. Not that my kitty isn’t worth it… I have 4 months to think about it.

Thanks very much for the suggestions.

Ah, I didn’t realize how little you would use it. In that case, I recommend Ovitrol flea spray. I use it on the outdoor cats who are too numerous for special topical stuff or the collars.

Thanks very much for suggesting Ovitrol. I will check it out.

I use Cheristin for my indoor/outdoor cat.

I wonder how long a seresto collar would last if tightly bagged between uses? They go 8 months of continuous wear on the animal. Might be possible to get several trips out of a single collar…

I moved to a new place last august and around february I found that it came with a previous tenant. I bought a package of Advantage II and it has worked fine. I dont think there was a large population, perhaps one or two that escaped the cleaning and pet decontamination. I only found 2 dead fleas and none since. I applied the last of 4 treatments last week.

That said, if you kitty had reaction once there is a potential for reaction to other topicals.

It is important to note that fleas can jump on and off lay eggs and then die. I would certainly extend kitties protection beyond the brief trip to assure that you do not get a freeloader into your car or dropping off into the house

We have used Advantage II with success for our indoor/outdoor kitties. We are switching to Seresto collars for the dogs but not the cats. I don’t like collars on cats that can go outdoors even if they are supposed to be breakaway. Too much risk for me.
