Is there a maximum length or number of characters for posts?

I just typed out a very long quote, and now it won’t post.

There is no maximum set. What happens when you try to post it?

The message composition field autosaves content as you’re typing, so you should be able to restore your text if you lost the post by going back to that thread and clicking the “restore autosave” button from the bottom of the message composition field.
