As the title states. I have the horses name but not tat #. Is that something I can do myself somewhere or can someone check for me?
The Jockey Club won’t give out registration numbers like that (which is what the tattoo is.) They’re worried about people making counterfeit papers (not unreasonably.) The assumption is if you have the horse you can look at the tattoo yourself. If you DON’T have the horse, you don’t need the number for any legitimate purpose, is their reasoning.
What do you need the number for? All the online lookups are by name, if you want a race record.
Ahhh poo. Thanks DOI, that’s sort of what I figured.
I came across an ad on CL for an aged TB; I believe the horse is one I knew in a previous life, one whom I had thought met an unpleasant end. I’ve contacted the owner and if it IS the same horse, they have had a rough road but not quite as bad as I’d thought!
The horse came with the barn the current owner is renting; it had been abandoned there by some past renter and cared for by the folks who rented it previously. Current owner is trying to find a nice family lease and was pretty excited to hear from someone who might know the horse. He’s an arab guy and doesn’t know much about TB tats. I told him what the first letter should be and we’ll find out today if that’s right, but I thought if I could give him the whole # that would be easier. If he can read it, I’ll have him send it my way and I’ll try to get a positive ID.
If this is the same horse… well, I think the universe would be giving me a mulligan. I’ve been kicking my own ass for years for letting this creature slip through the cracks.
Ruby, its the same horse. (Whether it actually is or not of course) If the horse needs you, he needs you. The smudges on his lip have nothing to do with it. If its not the same horse do it in his honor.
Oh Laurie.
I know you’re right. Unfortunately I really cannot take this horse in right now, but if it IS the same horse, I may be able to help guide her back to other parties who “knew her when”. I’m still waiting to hear back from the current owner, but from what I’ve been able to glean about the person who has her right now, she has landed in safe hands after several years of uncertainty.
If it IS her, I’m going to have quite a story to tell you guys!
