Is there an APP that measures MPM?

If you carry cell phone on course, that is really not safe (e.g. fall off and have the phone puncture your body, shatter glass in your skin, and other possible issues).

Also, if you need an app to track speed while on course, regardless of type, you have a lot bigger issues and really need to go back to the beginning to learn to ride.

I can understand using an app with the phone mounted to your arm on a gallop to learn speed in training.

This does! It works like a stoplight red= too fast, white = good, green = too slow. Then connects to an app on your phone. Saw a presentation from the developer at the Area IV annual meeting and it was awesome.

“Vert is a multi-purpose sensor and display that attaches to the headpiece of your bridle at the poll, and helps you ride with consistency and precision every day. Choose Angle, and get feedback on your horse’s head angle in relation to the vertical. Choose Pace to get feedback on how fast you are riding.”

ETA: I thought this was a super cool idea, because you can set your speed range and get instant feedback on whether you’re on the right pace or not… as opposed to having to mark off a huge area and then not really know until the end whether you’re too fast or too slow. Sounds great for developing that right “fell” that you can otherwise only get by riding lots and lots and lots.

LOL well never really thought about that…but it does beg the question then, what is the purpose of mpm if the speed is so inconsistent around the course.

Holy crap that is so cool!

Hello, I’m the developer! Thanks for the kind words.

I’m happy to answer any questions.

I am always getting fussed at for going too fast. Tried to measure out a speed trap this weekend. Turns out 300-400 m of relatively level, good footing requires alot of room.
I tried the equilab app, but I am skeptical as to some aspects of its accuracy. Pretty sure my horse doesnt have a 4 ft stride…

I’ve tried it a few times. The first time it seemed to work well. The second time the GPS didn’t work and it didn’t track my route, but seemed accurate in terms of WTC. My trainer and I used it the other day on a fitness ride–she is preparing her horse for not-Rolex. We both tracked our gallop. The MPM was pretty consistent between our two phones and seemed close to accurate.

ETA: I went back and looked at my rides and it doesn’t look as accurate as I thought. My first hack was measured as 44 min and 0.9 miles. I don’t think we’re that slow!

I would say the equilab data is about 75% accurate. It’s accurate more often than not, but it definitely has “hiccups.”

I’ve been turning it on for every ride, and when finished, occasionally I’ll see incorrect data… like when it shows on the map that I cantered straight through the arena fence. Hmm, didn’t remember that part of my ride.

But overall, I feel like it is in the right ballpark with my speed. If you use it on conjunction with a watch or timer, the information can be quite useful.

Oh, and I did figure out how to change it to mpm.

Bought this when it was first released… before this feature was even announced. Still haven’t charged it 12 months later. Time to get it up and running!
