Is This A Side-Effect of Prascend?

I read that one of the side-effects of prascend is lethargy. I used to be able to get my naturally sluggy horse into forward-thinking mode with a tap tap of a dressage whip. While he was never super forward, I insisted he respond to the whip aid.

Now he can’t seem to get forward at all. Like a bicycle with two flat tires. He’s ok in every other respect, just under saddle it has become impossible to get him forward.
thanks.

Not that I’ve seen or heard of. But I would not hesitate personally, with the help of bloodwork and your vet, to adjust the dosage as necessary to get to the best dosage for your horse - I have learned that the “standard” 1 pill per day is just not the right dose for a lot of horses.

On the contrary, some horses regain the pep they lost as they lost thyroid function.

I agree, see what your vet may find, could be something else that is going on there.

The only side effect I know is that at times, their appetite is not like it was, they act like they don’t care if they eat.
Mine has gone thru a meal or two like that, then back to normal and I was warned of that.

Our pony is getting back his energy, I’d have your vet out.

I frequently wish lethargy was one of the side effects. But, nope!

Quite common, known as the “pergolide veil.” If you’re not already a member, I would join Dr. Kellon’s Cushings/IR group.

My Arab gelding was constantly depressed and slightly anorexic during the 3 years I had him on Pergolide and then Prascend. I finally just took him off of it during the fall of 2013, and he became his old self again pretty quick. Cleans up every meal, perky and PITA again. He was dx’d @ 26 yrs old, and is 30 right now.

My senior mare is on Prascend, and I have not experienced this side effect. In fact, she seems to feel better than she has in a long while.

I would check thyroid levels. If those check out - perhaps look into APF.

How long have you been medicating him?

I did not see that personally with my pony, but I don’t ride him because he’s tiny. But not eating is a big side effect of prascend/pergolide. Is your horse eating normally? Because if not, lethargy might be related to lack of calories.

Guess our gelding is not affected like that, he has been playing and running around big time since he has been on Prascend.

Started with one pill a day, then when the blood work came back to normal and he was still really dropping weight, we went to 1/2 pill and he has been on that for months now, but still watching him closely.

I still think the OP should see about other, before assuming is the Prascend.

My 25yo is definitely more energetic (now bucks around the pasture). He has put on a ton of weight.
But, he can’t tolerate a whole pill of Prascend and is on 1/2 tab which seems to suit him well!
I’d check with the vet as well!

This ! and what moving to dc said ```` experienced here

This and *** what moving to dc … experienced here with “Cushings” mare ~

My senior mare went into a 5-6 week low energy “funk” while her body was adjusting to the new metabolic state. (she was VERY out of whack with ATCH). Then she got more and more and more energy and is as normal as a 33 year old mare can be! She is holding steady on 2 tabs a day and levels are normal. She was off feed in that time and very dull. Almost in a fog. But she came back! Good luck!

My horse was blah on it for six months…then I took him off it and he is back to his energetic old self

My horse has been on prascend for 10 days now. Started with 1/2 a pill and now has been on 1 pill for 3 days. I noticed on day 2 feeding I had to beg her to eat. How long does this last and should I back her back down? Does she fill bad and can you still ride them? Tks Becky

Hi Becky, well an old thread but certainly still relevant!!

So I had an old guy on Prascend. He could not do a whole pill, could only do half but he did really well on it. I would definitely talk to your vet and see what he/she thinks. I started at one pill, also got “the veil” so backed him down. He stayed on that half pill and did fine (with Cushings anyway) for 2.5 years until he died.

Again, I’d talk to your vet about riding, as s/he knows your specific situation, but my guy was fine for riding (he didn’t get ridden much as he was old) You do have to keep an eye out for skin stuff (he did get plenty of “rain rotty” type things) and laminitis.

Good luck to you and your mare. LOTS of great threads on COTH re Cushings/prascend/“the veil” (not eating) and so on!!!

Tha’ts an older thread on CUshings but there is a recent one from August on Cushings. If you type in Cushings or Prascend, into the search bar, you should get a bunch of hits as it is a highly relevant topic!!!
