Is this even possible - 15-20k for novice packer?

I am about to be in the market for a novice packer, by which I mean a steady eddie been-there-done-that horse with no spook or behavioral issues to trek this old lady around N. Preferably under 12-13 years old, and with a competition record. Doesn’t have to be a dressage winner, but good completions.

When I look around, I see a lot of what I would call novice greenies, that is horses that have a few competitions under their belt with a pro. This is NOT what I am looking for. Where do you find the packers? Does anyone even sell them? I’m in Kentucky but willing to travel within reason. Thoughts?

Yup- it exists! We sold two this year, both for around 20k. Both horses are right around 16 hands, under the age of 10, both novice/training packers who had wins on record and were quite consistent and competitive at those levels. One was a plain, bay, not particularly flashy TB who was probably maxed out at training but a good dude! The other a flashier, ISH who also competed 3rd level dressage and would have brought in a higher price, but he had some fetlock arthritis/history and was proving difficult to get through a prepurchase, despite being sound and actively competing. Both were sold by Courtney Cooper at C Square Farm who honestly and fairly represented both of them. So, they may not be the fanciest and they might have a blip on a prepurchase but they definitely exist!

I see that type advertised regularly in Area II. Suggest joining the USEA Area II Facebook page (although they are moving some of the sales ads to the website classifieds since Facebook is clamping down on animal sales). You should also look for kids heading off to college - many are likely leasing or selling.

$20k should do you plenty. You should be able to get something fairly fancy going Novice for that price.

I also suggest Courtney Cooper, she’s a great matchmaker.

Check with Cathy Wieschhoff at Carriage Station Farm in Lexington. She would know exactly what you’re looking for & what’s “around”. Very reputable! A lot of folks are at AEC’s now too. Have you gone to the KHP to see what’s posted?
