Horse was injured slightly on/below fetlock. Is this proud flesh starting?
Looks like it to me!
Yep. Bubblegum pink tissue extending above the skin margins. You’ll want to knock that back asap.
Thanks. Thought it was, but I’ve never had a horse with it yet. Will give the vet a call this morning.
I’ve used the Equaide and it really does work. I’ve used it to prevent proud flesh, and also on some old areas. Proud flesh doesn’t have nerves so you can remove some of the old tissue and use the Equaide.
A lot of products sold for proud flesh have copper sulfate which you should not use. It is caustic and destroys healthy tissue. It can damage the healthy tissue around a wound. It also can damage new tissue in a wound that is healing.
It’s expensive. It comes with a little brush to apply it. It gets really thick in the jar when it sits. There is a popsicle stick to stir it. Add a little water and it will thin out. I shake it and then use the stuff in the top of jar. He had a cut through the skin that wasn’t serious. It didn’t look quite right and when I felt it with my finger it was lumpy. I used the Equaide and a couple of days later it was fine.
OP, sounds like you’re calling the vet, but in the future if you see it starting, what has worked for me is to 1) keep it wrapped religiously, 2) alternate an antimicrobial with hydrocortisone cream (the OTC stuff) on a 1:1 - 1:3 day schedule. The hydrocortisone can really bring down the very localized inflammation. This was recommended to me by an old vet, and I could not believe the difference one day of hydrocortisone cream made (I ended up only doing maybe 2 days of hydrocortisone). Ended up not having to debride and the wound healed beautifully, with stuff I already had on hand.
