Looked like a rough landing from the triple bar. Anyone know how he’s feeling today?
He looked off to me after his round - would not be surprised if he’s pulled/strained something . . . Jingles for him, but a scowl for Mario . . .
I am sooo glad somebody saw what I saw. I was really upset when he continued on and didn’t retire. I think the horse was definitely off and more than a little rattled, then to use the crop over that last big oxer just really raised my ire. What would he accomplish at that point other than to make an injury worse? To me, it showed total disregard for the welfare of his horse.
It was a hard landing off the triple bar! I watched the slo-mo replay several times, and it looked like he rolled right over his back legs, and hit his stifles on the ground before scrambling onto his hind feet. I’d also worry about his lower back after that sort of landing.
He did look off behind after that, and had an odd take-off at the next fence.
Jingles that he’s ok.
Bumping this up so maybe someone will know…
Yikes, it looked awful. I was amazed, too, that the horse could continue, and that the rider didn’t even give a thought to see if perhaps he should retire (quite a contrast to the two I saw on X-country day who pulled up and checked their horses out, and then retired shortly after. Guess that’s what 85 seconds vs 11+ minutes time does to you.)
I hope the horse is ok.
That was seriously some of the worst riding I have ever seen by Mario D…he totally ran the horse right through the huge oxer, and then after the horse fell down completely on his back end he didn’t even stop to see if he was okay, just continued riding like an idiot, blowing the course apart in the process. The horse just about swam through the next oxer, and to then smack him with his crop over the last fence (which came down as well) was just the last straw. Not a good representation for our country at all.

Until tonight, I had totally blocked out that it was an American rider!
Not what I’ve come to expect from our team.
Alas they have the Urico spill as part of a WEG compilation at this page: youtube.com - Universal Sports “team horse jumping crashes”. (That is their title - not mine)
It will be the first clip.
I haven’t seen any comments from Jane regarding Urico or Mario’s ride.
Deslauriers and Urico were able to gain their composure and continue with the round after circling before fence #8. They picked up 13 faults to finish in 52nd place individually on a score of 21.000.
“My horse started out great. He was very ready, and he was jumping well out here,” said Deslauriers. “I was a little close at 5b, and he made a big effort there. I think maybe the light was a little spooky. He’s nine years old. Last night, he was over-jumping everything. I think he was just trying to jump too high, and he got himself into trouble a little bit. Then I lost my stirrup and couldn’t keep him straight so I had to circle. I think he scared himself trying to over-jump the triple bar. He hit the rail quite hard and then he stepped on himself, so he felt a little shock on his feet. But he was a good trooper to try to finish the course well. It was a little bit of a struggle but he got himself over.”
“Mario’s horse is a little green,” said Morris. “He had a great year. I’m not saying too green, but he was green at that triple bar. That was a very impressive fence.”

Actually I’ve seen him ride even worse! At Harrisburg in 2008(I think) in the Gambler’s choice class Mario was trying to fit in a extra jump before the timer went off. In the process of trying to fit the extra jump in he ran the horse to the base of the jump, angled the fence to the point that there was no way the horse could jump it and the poor horse flipped over the jump almost landing on top of him!
Luckily both the horse and Mario were okay but that was one of the worst rides I’ve ever seen from Mario in the years I’ve been watching him at Harrisburg! I was shocked!
I was shocked that he continued on after Urico fell. It was very obvious that the poor thing was rattled and upset. IMO it’s wasn’t worth continuing on, what was there to gain? It’s not like he had a chance at an individual medal! I agree, it wasn’t a good representation of our country!
Ouch, that did look bad!
I was a little bit miffed he switched from riding for Canada to riding for the U.S.A.–but after that, you guys can have him!

Thats what I was thinking after speed day too! Maybe we can trade Yann back for Kevin Staut as well?
IMHO, the horse didn’t look like he was using his hind end as powerfully off the ground on Tuesday as he did on Monday, both rides I saw in person. I saw yesterday’s on TV and, again, noticed the same thing I had in person on Tuesday.
I’m shocked to hear everyone ripping Mario apart! Urico is green and when Mario tried to move up to get to the base of the triple bar his horse did not respond because he is green and very careful and was backed off by the very imposing fence. The horse did not respond to Mario’s leg or stick so he jumped way up and so couldn’t get across and crashed. At that point the medals were still pretty wide open (especially silver and bronze) Sapphire had not yet gone so nobody knew she would have 8 faults. To the person who was apalled that Mario used his stick at the last oxer, he probably did it to encourage the horse to jump across the back rail to avoid a repeat of the triple bar and scaring the horse. I really don’t understand why everyone is attacking him. In fact, Lauren Hough ruined what was probably going to be a clear round the day before by asking for an insanely long distance to a wide oxer. It wasn’t long because the horse was green and backed off, but rather it was the rider’s eye being wrong and making a distance error that one would not expect a rider of that level to make. She could have had just as bad a crash but simply got lucky.
I don’t agree…he approached that fence like he thought it was still the water jump from the day before, not a huge triple bar oxer. It was pure rider error, he ran the horse right through it and didn’t even give him a chance to get off the ground.

Having witnessed it live, I agree with your perspective; however, the horse was clearly NQR in back after that debacle at the triple. Maybe it wasn’t anything serious and was more the horse still going “ow” from the surprise of messing up the triple, but regardless, I seriously have to question if Mario felt anything wrong with the horse on that landing. And if he did, I am of the opinion he should have pulled up. I won’t attack Mario, particularly as I’m not at the level he is, but I will question. And I also hope that the horse is feeling better.
I only saw the clip that was posted, but it did look nasty and the horse could not possibly be 100% after that. This is when I wish that officials could stop a round rather then letting a rider continue. Granted it may be easier said than done, but sad to say that in the spirit of the moment, riders dont always make the best decisions…
I was going to post the same thing!!! lol
But I wish we could see the clip in Canada! You Tube is blocked.

For me, it wasn’t the ride itself; Lauren had a lot of mistakes, Mario had a lot of mistakes, Mclain made some mistakes even - all riders make mistakes, like it or not. What I am upset about in regards to Mario is that he continued after the fall. The horse, to my eyes, had a rough fall, and was NQR at first. I can understand Mario continuing over the next vertical, but the way Urico jumped the following oxer (Keeneland) was definitely NOT ok in light of a fall like that, and I as a rider would have pulled up. He didn’t have a hope of beating Lauren’s score, so why push on? Cropping the horse through the rest of the course was just ridiculous. It wasn’t poor riding that got me upset, it was the poor horsemanship.
