ISO Boarding in Los Angeles Area

I’m considering moving my two mostly-retired babies (who are in their early 20s) to the Los Angeles area, as that’s where my work is based. In our current situation, we have about two acres of pasture for them and they sleep in stalls at night (~9 hours in turnout per day). These two are my whole world and are extremely special, and I’m looking for the right situation in the LA area if it exists.

Our must-haves are all-day turnout where they can be together, and a kind, relaxed environment with good vibes. We really don’t want to be at a show barn, and I think the ideal situation would be a private/backyard barn in the immediate LA area where the homeowners just want some horses.

If anyone has any recommendations or referrals, I’d really appreciate it! Open to going outside of LA proper but prefer to stay in LA County or LBC. I see them everyday so within 45 mins would be optimal.

Some questions to help people help you. Your work is in LA, but you don’t live there now, correct?

The first answer is, yes, it certainly exists. Not needing an arena opens up your options quite a bit. If you have the money, you can buy such a place, and have them at home. Would you prefer to board? There are also places tucked in here and there that have more rustic spaces for horses, especially in the canyons, Sunland, Burbank, etc. The next question is, what part of LA do you actually want. There are pockets of horse properties scattered in all sorts of improbable spots, again especially if you’re not worried about riding space.

Also consider how flat it needs to be, and how large. Some of the options will be pretty hilly, some smaller and flatter, or more remote and larger. Some will have more access to trails than others.

A site that may be helpful is horsetrader.com, although very small places, as you’re expecting, will be more word of mouth.

Some areas in LA County that have horse-zoned backyards with a decent amount of room, though finding 2 acres might be harder:
*Palos Verdes Peninsula (RHE, RPV, RH)
*Portions of the San Fernando Valley, mostly in the foothills, though there’s Burbank
*Topanga
*Malibu
*San Gabriel Valley, though it may be more barns than backyards

LA County adjacent include:
*Simi Valley
*Thousand Oaks/Moorpark/Santa Rosa Valley area
*Portions of Orange and San Bernardino Counties—Chino Hills, Brea, Orange Park Acres etc.

If you want to see them regularly, a location out of LA would depend on where you’re living and working.

Adding that there are Facebook groups for some areas—Griffith Park, Santa Rosa Valley, Orange County, etc. Thermal Classifieds might also be helpful. Another tip is to visit tack and feed stores in the area, check out their bulletin boards, post a sign of your own, and talk to people in the store.

Thanks for this. I currently live in Colorado (as do the horses) and have an apartment in Los Angeles (central LA) and are there once a month. For at least the next year, we’d want to board and not buy a place. The dream would be somewhere in the Brentwood or Atwater area, even Burbank. Definitely not concerned about riding space.

I’ll check out horsetrader but if you know of any specific word of mouth options, definitely let me know.

Atwater Village and Brentwood are pretty dramatically far apart, and separated by pretty awful traffic.

If you are in the Atwater area, you may find it pretty easy to scoot up the 2 and get to Sunland/Tujunga.

If you are in the Brentwood area, you might find some nice quiet places in Topanga Canyon.

Hi there!
We live on a HORSE PROPERTY located in the Thousand Oaks- Waverly Heights neighborhood. We have 4 stalls currently with large open corrals attached to each. We are butted up to the Conejo Creek Equestrian park which is a dream. There are 4 full sized (one lighted) arenas that are maintained regularly. There are 3 round pens, 4 turnouts, an official dressage ring, trails, restrooms, watering station, jumps, etc. There is actually a Hunter Jumper Dressage schooling show 12/1/24 at the park and more throughout the year. The home is a 5 bedroom beautiful, spacious and peaceful home with a large front/ backyard. Currently myself (F-43) and my equestrian enthusiast daughter (F-11) only reside. 2 available rooms, one being the massive master bedroom on one side of the house. My daughter and I stay in the other half of the house. Our current roommate, an equine veterinarian, is getting married. We’re so happy for her but we need to find a new housemate asap….her part of the house will be available on Dec 7. We are right off the 101 & the 23 highway…close to everything

The Burbank-Glendale-Griffith Park Equestrians FB group will be your best place to look for backyard/private boarding in Burbank or Atwater, plus in Shadow Hills, Sun Valley, Lakeview Terrace, etc. There is also a Hansen Dam Equestrians group for that area.
