I know there have been great threads on this, but my search is coming up dry. Shopping for a 1-3 year old fancy hunter

I think inventory is at an all-time low. You are seeing the effects of the recession in that many breeders either got out of the business, or left their mares open for a few years. I know I spent a huge amount of time trying to help someone find a real top quality hunter prospect last year (and was spending a considerable sum). She was looking for a 2yo, ended up with a yearling. Good that you are flexible on age.
The good news is that for folks that will be looking down the road, I think we’ve bottomed out and the number of mares bred is increasing. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help you right now.
You are probably referring to the east coast of the USA - but there is a farm breeding some great hunter/jumper horses on the east coast of Canada. Old Bull Farms has some of the best jumper bloodlines in North America in their breeding stock. They are located in Nova Scotia and they are fantastic to deal with.
Edited to add… although they are not exclusively hunter/jumper breeders the following farms in Atlantic Canada also have a couple of great hunter/jumper prospects:
Aileron Stables in PEI has a 2 year colt named Spin Doctor with a canter to die for and a temperament to match. His mom is a Landkonig/Diamont mare and his sire is Schwarzenegger (a sire known to produce both hunter and jumpers). The temperament of both parents is impeccable - I know because I have been on trail rides with both.
New Perth Farm in also in PEI has produced a few horses that have done well in the hunter and jumper ring. Their Vuzarma mare by Hamlet has produced some especially lovely hunter/jumper prospects.
And Never Say Never Farm has a fabulous colt by Banderas for sale, but he is just a weanling.
Sorry - I love vicarious horse shopping. D
Mo Swanson doesn’t exclusively breed hunters, but she’s produced some nice ones.
Equistar Farm.
Magic Hill Farm.

We have a very fancy three year old, but she’s not for sale.
In general, I agree with AHF regarding inventory and the economy. I don’t know of many prospects in that age range. We bred mares again this year for the first time in 5 years.
You may wish to consider 4-5 year olds that have been lightly started.
thanks so much!! sure, Canada is definitely in my search for sure

Her website is a bit of a work in progress but Lindsay is breeding some really nice youngsters and usually has several sale horses or the network to help you find what you’re looking for.
Click on the young horses section of the site and check out Senona, IHF Champion 3yo
Select Sporthorses in Greenback, TN. The filly that won the two year old class at the Sallie B. Wheeler is for sale among others.
Ken Borden at Little Bit Farms in Illinois is having a big sale because the expressway is taking over his farm. He breeds warmbloods for all types of sport and they are nice horses…might be worth the trip. He has lots of really nice horses.
Also in Canada, Ferme Beaulieu in Quebec has some phenomenal stallions, and while they focus more on jumpers, pretty much everything on their farm has a 9-10 jump, if I were in the market for a young horse that is the first place I would go!
ETA: Here is the link: http://www.fermebeaulieufarm.com/
I have a serious crush on Quel Homme, one of their 2010 babies, but I need a 3 year old like a hole in the head!
We have several in that age range both that we have bred ourselves and youngsters we are raising for fellow breeders. Some started under saddle and the young ones started their ground work. We also know of other farms within an hour drive that have young prospects for sale. Happy to share additional information if interested.

If you go the midwest route Jill Knowles has a couple 2 year olds outside of Chicago that are worth a look, can see them at the Hidden Knoll Farm link in our sale barn pages (link in sig, the RuizSoler12 free jumps great). Also, Kim Barone in MN - Raven Ridge Farm - has been breeding some hunter babies the last few years. Know she has some nice weanlings right now and probably some older ones too.
And of course Magic Hill in the east.
Avalon Equine in OK (aka Equine Reproduction.com) – Kathy St. Martin has a lovely Argosy 3 yr old for sale. Super hunter/jumper prospect.
They are really the tops for breeding top sport horses. www.avalon-equine.com. His name is Aerosmith. She has some good videos online, including freejumping as a 2 yr. old. Nice horse.
There are some really nice youngsters as well as well started horses and those with show records being auctioned off here: http://kdjumpers.com/auction-information
Unfortunately, it’s a dispersal sale, so the farm itself won’t be producing any more.
Try www.CapitalWarmbloods. Com
Nani Lio Farm in NC is having a dispersal sale due to a relocation. Signature Sporthorses breeds some nice babies also
I think you will have a hard time finding the age range to some extent. When I was looking for my now 3 year old, most of the really nice babies were purchased as foals or in-utero. I purchased my mare in-utero. She is perfection wrapped in fur so I got lucky but it’s been a long wait. At 3 she’s had offers on her that I would never have been able to afford so price of course has a whole lot to do with finding one.
