ISO Guest Expert Recommendations

I host a podcast for Ride iQ called Ask An Expert. The idea is to deep-dive with professionals in various areas of expertise, people we wouldn’t generally get to ask questions of very readily. People are invited to attend the recording live to ask questions, too, and I’d be happy to share those links here for anyone who wants to do that.

There have been over 100 episodes to-date (hence needing some help coming up with upcoming guests!) and past episodes have included:

Train Your Brain for Better Riding with Natalie Hummel, Equestrian Mindset Coach
“Ask a Vet” with Dr. Lisa Casinella, a US Team Vet
Ask a Dressage Judge with Peter Gray, Judge at the World Equestrian Games
Green Horses 101 with Lauren Sprieser, Grand Prix dressage rider

So my question is - whose brain would you love to pick if you could? Or what topic would you like to dive into? The expert/topic can be within dressage, another discipline, or more general. Again, I’m more than happy to share invites to these convos or recordings so you can hear from the people you recommend.

How about a member of the Ground Jury at an FEI competition? Every FEI official has to undertake rigorous training at their own expense and keep themselves up to date - so there are likely to be interesting back stories there. Very few competitors understand how complicated it is to put on an international show.

I love that idea - thank you! I’ll certainly pursue this. I’d love to learn about the person’s story accomplishing their credentials and maybe get into some of their recommendations for riders at FEI competitions regarding lesser-known rules and etiquette.

Lots of folks ask about how the tests are created. Perhaps someone from the test committee? (sorry I dont know who…)
A nutritionist (Maybe Bob Wagner from KER? Or someone else from KER… He is my local rep)

These two might not fall under “Ask An Expert” but I’d love to hear a podcast about pros or ammys with “off breeds” succeeding in dressage and also one about ordinary adult ammy folks who produced their own horse up the levels!

I can’t name an expert for this, but I think the subject of cross-training would be of interest. Not just the advantages, but how people go about it – deciding how much time to spend doing dressage work, and how much time to spend cross training. What cross disciplines are helpful for horses with different “issues;” which ones are generally good for everyone?

Heather Richards was a guest recently on that second topic - she is an ammy rider, keeps her horses at home, and has brought her horse up to 4th level. Somehow she also has a fulltime jobs and hobbies (like racing vintage cars…she’s pretty cool). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6VPnPMK0So

Great idea to interview someone who is having success showing a less-typical breed in dressage. There’s a Fjord rider I could try to track down!

And to reference another thread here, how about someone who can talk about that yawning abyss between first and second levels (or second and third, or third and fourth), and how to bridge it.

Equine nutritionist Robert Jacobs is excellent.
He was a guest speaker on Sporthorse Cruise, and everyone was impressed with his seminars.
His talks were very detailed, and covered young horse development, and reproductive nutrition, among other topics.
I followed his recommendations for one of my older horses who has unique issues
and it really turned her around.

He’s the Equine Innovation Manager at Purina, and not only does he know the material, he’s an experienced lecturer. He’s also the nutritionist for the Budweiser Clydesdales

His bio is here:

The Dressage Radio Show podcast has had Nadine Schwartsman on a few times. She is on the test writing committee and has explained how it works.

Great suggestion!! Thank you!

This is such a cool topic. Maybe I can find a trainer who regularly integrates cross discipline work!

This guy:

The only clinician I audited (& rode with in clinics twice) where I came away feeling I learned something. And saw improvement in every horse/rider.
For me that’s BIG, as I’m a Physical Learner & watching usually doesn’t translate well for me.

Thank you so much for this rec! I’ll reach out.

I hope you can arrange a clinic with Jeff Ashton-Moore.
It’s been many years, but I’d still enjoy auditing or riding my very low-level horse with him.
No breed snobbery, or even discipline-centric teaching < one attendee was strictly Western Pleasure & I witnessed a change for the better in both horse & rider.
Pls post the link if he agrees to join your podcast.
