ISO trainer near Houston, TX to develop a young hunter

I’m looking for recommendations for a trainer in the Houston, Texas, area to develop a young hunter. The horse has been started over fences and is a 3’3-3’6 prospect. Ideally, the barn would be equipped to bring the horse along and then coach me in the adults/amateurs when he’s ready for me to take over the reins, but I’m open to sending him to a young horse specialist first if that’s a better fit. My board/training budget is flexible, but I’d prefer for him to get his mileage at in-state shows rather than shipping out to Tryon, Kentucky, etc. Professional, trustworthy, and drama-free with safe, horse-friendly facilities are all musts.

I’ve done some research online (e.g., Will Robertson at Pine Hollow, Nada Wise at Rendezvous, Liza Richardson at Hunter’s Run), but I’m hopeful that I can benefit from the wisdom of COTH. And don’t want to miss out on someone who would be a good fit but doesn’t have an online presence. Thanks in advance!

I would check out JNL Stables (Jessica Law) as well. She’s got several young hunters in the barn along with amateurs. Mostly shows in Katy with a big trip once a year to KY.

Hi there,
I’m at Pine Hollow and have been there for 11 years! Love it. Will and Sarah are great with the situation you describe.

It may also depend on where you are living or how far you are willing to drive. Jessica Law, as mentioned, above is also good. Different part of town. Same with Nada and Liza. Good and in different parts around Houston.

PM me if you have any questions.

Liza is great, especially with young horses! She is also a fantastic teacher. If her location works for you, I highly recommend her.

Happy to answer any questions via PM. But, I would suggest reaching out to Liza directly. (Definitely visit any barns you are interested in to get a feel for the program and “vibe.”)

My good friend, an adult amateur, rides with Liza with her green young hunter. I don’t know Liza, but my friend has nothing but praise for her and her staff. Liza will be showing her mare in the upcoming shows at Katy. She keeps her mare at her own farm, but ships over for lessons or leaves the mare there for Liza to school.

Thanks everyone! This is all very helpful.

Hi Polowraps-did you start looking around?

I’m an instructor at Quantum Hunters and Jumpers in Houston. Our program operates out of The Houston Polo Club located in Memorial Park. Super convenient location minutes from anywhere inside the loop!

I moved to Houston 8ish years ago for graduate school at Rice University. I worked part-time at a few different h/j barns during grad school, and I started working at QHJ almost 3 years ago. I have to say working for QHJ has been the best experience of all the barns I’ve worked! Excellent instruction, excellent horsemen and women, experienced trainers who work with greenies all the way up to the more finished, show mounts. The horses are happy, well cared for, and top quality. We are an A-show barn, and we show both the rated and schooling shows at Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, TX.
