Hello everyone! I am going to try a gelding in Wellington FL but since I am not local I don’t know any vets. If anyone has a vet that can do a basic PPE with commentary please let me know their name (affordable is a bonus). Thanks!!
I used Palm Beach Equine when I vetted a horse there a few years ago. They did a great job, no surprises. Exam with full set of rads around $3k which was in line with my expectations. It’s Wellington, I expected even pricier….
I would recommend Cricket Russillo, I know her from when she was our vet at Fairfield Equine back in the day
3k for a vetting my mind is blown! Why so high
That’s pretty typical for a pretty thorough PPE. Between the trip charge, multiple x-ray views of the major joints (not including back & neck), flexions and physical exam you will hit $3k. If you add drug test and back/neck rads, it’ll go even higher. This was my experience for a PPE 4 years ago, not in the pricey neighborhood of Welly. Now, if OP does only a basic PPE, which to me is just a physical exam (eyes, heart, etc) and basic flexions, then maybe it would be ~$1k, depending on the practice. You can ask for a quote up front knowing $$ will increase if you start adding on.
Palm Beach Equine is known for being on the pricier side due to their reputation, so I’m leaning toward using a private vet instead. I’m planning to do a targeted PPE rather than a full-body just a basic clinical exam with flexions, X-rays of the front feet, hocks, stifles, and the back
Reid’s office or Daniel Equine
What else is there? This seems like a pretty full PPE to me because you are doing X rays of everything except neck and back, which I see as “extra”. I would still expect this to be pricey.
It’s Wellington, everything is high there. But it isn’t that much cheaper here in Indiana…once you start taking films it adds up fast! I didn’t even count paying my local vet to review them.
I figure it’s also an investment having rads on file for later, I tend to keep my horses so the baseline is useful.

Fairfield Equine has a full service practice there now.
I’m not familiar with the vets they show at the Wellington location but if Dr. Neff, Dr. Harmon or Dr. Edwards spend time there, they would all be good choices.
