ISO: Young Horse Trainers

I am looking for recommendations for a trainer for my young event horse. I would like to find someone to give my coming 4 year old a strong foundation. Located on the East Coast. Looking for 3-4 months of training situation. Who have you all worked with and recommend (and who should we stay away from)?

Thanks!

Not sure where on the east coast but The Frame Sport Horses and Windchase are fabulous with the young ones. Both in Northern Virginia area.

Clasing Equestrian is my recommendation. Dan and Kaitlin are lovely riders, excellent horsemen, and their head girl Katie is fantastic. They are in Lovettesville, VA. They have shown 2 of my mares and started a 3rd one under saddle. They do an excellent job of keeping owners updated with weekly YouTube videos. Check out clasing equestrian on YouTube you’ll see a ton (if you look up felicity that’s my 3 yo they started)

Solid recommendations so far, also highly visible programs that may not have openings on your timeline so I’ll add:

Kelley Williams at A Bit Better Farm in MD (has done a fantastic job ammy proofing my now-5-year-old)
McKenzie Dey Cumbea at Morning Line Farm in NC

If you’re in the northeast, Kait Schultz at Thundercrest Performance Horses in Saugerties, NY is truly wonderful. She started a baby for me this summer and I could not be happier with the horse I got back.

Happy to pass JM’s direct contact to you also. He is one of the best in the business!

East Coast is a pretty broad region, can you be more specific on what you want accomplished in those 3-4 months? Is this young horse unstarted? Or is it started?

All the replies so far are fantastic programs - I can vouch for Kait Schultz as well, she is very experienced with TBs too.

Depending on what you are looking for, I could have another suggestion if you are northern east coast and the horse is unstarted.

I have a KWPN filly. She is started under saddle. We’ve done quite a bit of trail walking to gain her confidence and she has basic w/t/c skills under tack. Looking for a program to put the skills together with the goal of YEH - 4 year olds in the fall. I am in Pennsylvania. I am not limited geographically.

You can always look at who did well last week as well, and go from there.

Lisa Marie Fergusson (5* rider) is in the Unionville PA area. She started my horse when he was young. Gives a good foundation on the flat and over fences. Incoperates hacking into the schedule too. She’s brought up a lot of her own horses and clients to upstanding citizens. I was very happy with how my horse ended up out of her program.

Stay away from Top Line Show Stables in NJ. They aren’t eventers, but they do play in HJ land in the NE.

Stephanie Cauffman/Megan Roswech with Elemental Sporthorses/Skipjack Farm in Ocala. They’ve done an amazing job with my young one as well as others I’ve seen come through the barn in both the riding and showing aspects, but also the good citizen piece. The care and horsemanship is second to none, I had mine here for 6 months before I moved. The young ones aren’t playing second fiddle to an UL string, they get just as much attention and care as the FEI horses.

Also recommend The Frame Sporthorses.

Martin and Joe at The Frame Sport Horses are excellent. I’ve had horses with them repeatedly over many years.

Late to the party, but I highly recommend Kelly Ransom. She’s based in PA and winters in Aiken. She is quiet, kind, and provides a really well rounded education for all her horses.

Kaitlin and Dan Clasing - especially if you are aiming for the YEH series. They did a super job of setting them up for success in that and have qualified and shown many youngsters in the Championships

3rd Endorsement for Kaitlin and Dan Clasing. I have sent them 2 young horses to train and compete- both did the YEH classes and both were also very well prepared/ presented for their breed registry Mare performance testing (KWPN IBOP). Excellent program for the horses, they are well cared for with transparency and regular, excellent updates on your horses progress. Owners are encouraged to visit and attend shows.

Thank you for the shout out. Jubilee Equestrian is a mid sized program in VA with a strong focus on young horse development. I am both a competitor and a YEH judge; so am able to offer a unique perspective in my training.
