Issues picking up right lead

Hi COTH, my BN event horse has suddenly been reluctant to pick up her right lead. She is generally easy on both leads, which has me a bit concerned. This happens both on the longe line and under saddle. Left lead is completely fine. When going to the right, she 75 percent of the time picks up the left lead instead of the right.

What physical issues can be contributors to this? She previously fractured her withers and does have kissing spines, which she is under vet care for. Thanks!

I would check hocks.

Thanks - I either suspect hocks or neck. She has always been stiff for flexions, but her movement does not change, so we have not injected that yet. She has also been tripping more, so I do not know if there is a neurological component to this or not.

I would also suggest having her entire body checked by a chiropractor. I had a mare who struggled with leads when her hips were out of place, it presented very similarly to hock arthritis

I hope she feels better soon!

If she is tripping, I would stop riding her.

Time to have a thorough check of the LH, radiographs and ultrasound. Do not inject without a diagnosis.

Tripping in front? or behind?

Tripping is on the ground - she has tripped a few times lately on uneven stall matting.
