Issues with the new format
Ok, just for fun, I hit the compatability view thingy for IE9, the one that helps out with sites designed for older browsers (it looks like a broken sheet of paper), and now the Settings FAQ etc menu bar is where it belongs, the quick navigation menu works, my Welcome evenstar you last visited… info isn’t showing one word per line, and the ads are back in their rightful places.

So other folks having similar issues should try that.

Odd, though, wouldn’t an upgrade normally be designed to play well with the latest browsers? Like IE9?

But at least those issues can be resolved pretty easily, it seems, for users on this particular browser.

As for the red color and the tiny font, as Jeff Probst would say, “I got nothin’ for ya.”
Hey Thanks for this!!! I had the “compatability view” checked, so I unchecked it, and now I can scroll in the quick navigation drop down menu, and can go to my profile and access general settings, and not have the ads blocking the right side.

Coreene and Appsolute- Try this. It sounds like you had the same problem as me, and this worked. The “compatability view” is accessed by going to your “tools” tab at the top of the computer and clicking on it. Compatability view is about 1/2-3/4 of the way down. Uncheck it.

This for sure!
The Today’s post options needs to stay available so you can easily refresh.

I hang out in the Today’s Posts search (almost all day) and I just noticed something.

Once you hit Today’s Posts, and are surfing through the results, the menu tag goes away. I can’t refresh my search by hitting Today’s Posts again. I would have to navigate away from the forum, or click back to one of the main menu levels and search again.
However, if I open a topic out of the search, the menu tag comes back.
Font size for name of user on replies is too small!

Need a darker line between body of reply and sig.

Love the ‘like/dislike’ option, but PLEASE get rid of the cartoony thumbs and the question “Did you appreciate this post?” Just a simplE green and red ‘like/dislike’ button would suffice, and be much less intrusive.

Reply box outlines need to be darker.

Thank you so much!

Yesterday I was surfing the site on google chrome. Today I am on explorer. The blue menu bar with “settings, FAQ” etc. is mysteriously floating way over on the right side of the screen and isn’t aligned over the threads like it ought to be. Just FYI.

And when I go to Settings (former user control panel) my subscribed threads pop up UNDER the misaligned toolbar to the right… and they pop up UNDER the ads on the right side of the screen, so I can’t see or click on my recent threads.

I can send you screenshots if you want?!

Yet another complaint: search no longer works at all. 1st, the simple choice between posts and threads is gone. Consequently, I went to advanced search and got NOTHING, “no matches/results,” in response to subject I KNOW there have been plenty posts on.

Please try to get rid of the blank inch between the sig line and the thumbs. I’m ambivalent about the thumbs because I think they’ll eliminate a bunch of big quotes followed by +1 or ^^This, but I really hate the extra wasted space because I’m usually reading “behind” something on my computer screen.

Since the switch to the new format I am no longer getting email notifications when I get a new private message…I have the option in settings selected to receive email notification for new private messages… and yes have checked junk/spam folder also.

About the “stacking” and misaligned header bars? I got a new PC a few months ago and had to use that torn paper “compatability” icon to get IE8 to align with the older COTH browser and allow me to post replies.

I just hit it again this AM on a hunch and everything lines up just fine. Try clicking that if you have everything on top of everything else.

Now…I HATE the red text for new posts and replies…how to bag that ???

About the font size… on my computer (Windows 7, Firefox 16.0.2) the font size of the “Announcements” at the top and the “Archives” at the bottom appear to be the same as it used to be, while everything in between is smaller. Given the complaints about the smaller size, is there a simple way to just unify the whole thing? I would assume it would be easy enough given some things on the forum are already at that size, but you know what happens when you assume…

The font sizes are variable throughout the page for me. The discussion forum headers are particularly small.

I just measured and I have dark green bumper/frames around my page that are WIDER than the discussion forum frame!

Can you have adjustable frames? Why are they fixed soooo tiny?

Thanks.

Jetsmom, that fixed it, thanks!

However, it still doesn’t erase the problem I have with the Opera browser on the phone: with Opera I can’t post. I get the screen for it, but it doesn’t let me type into the reply box. And with the BlackBerry browser, COTH loads so slowly that the server times out before the page loads.

We realize it’s easy to miss posts made in different threads, etc. so I wanted to reiterate some of the items that we’re working on:

 • fixing the regular search and "find posts by" search (this is an area we may improve overall later, but right now we need to fix what's there)
 • getting the red out
 • darkening the line above sigs and reducing space below
 • fixing smaller font of discussion forum text on homepage
 • thumbnail photos for Premium members
 • fixing email notifications of PMs and subscribed threads
 • fixing temperamental post reply button at bottom of screen
 • various little formatting issues around the site
 • thumbs down is a trial, which we'll evaluate later (overall wording can also be changed)
 • incorrect thread view numbers

We’re looking into more, but just wanted to reiterate some of the top issues for folks coming onto this thread later. Some of these issues were fixed on the beta site, but the fixes didn’t carry over to the live one, and others only became apparent under normal use once we switched 'er on.

Evenstar, findeight, etc. thanks so much for the info about un-clicking the compatibility view icon for Internet Explorer v. 9 users who’d been using compatibility view to read the old site. I’ve added that to the general announcement so folks can hopefully find that info more easily.

Going to check in the with development crew for a status report.
Thanks ~

Worked for me, thanks!

Just a heads up from the development team that they should have some of the high-priority fixes addressed tonight.

Depending upon how much they get done, I might start a fresh input thread tomorrow so we can see what problems folks are still having…if we went that route, you’d be welcome to copy or reiterate any input you had from elsewhere that’s still unaddressed to be sure we’ve seen it.

Thanks again ~

Sorry if someone has already asked this:

Where did the “Today’s Posts” or “Newest Posts” options go?

I miss them :grief:

I do, however, love the new smilie choices :encouragement:

I get quick navigation and I get a drop down menu, but I really appreciated the old style which gave the forum and the go button, so you could bounce directly to the index page of the forum. I don’t seem to have anything like the Go button on this COTH avatar. I suppose that one could quick navigate to the forum and then click, but Go was so much quicker.

I am glad that the red is going to go away. I’ve no opinion on anything else because each time I check to see if the red is still here, I leave the site. Looking forward to no-red at some point, so I can read the discussions again.

I’m going to make many of the same comments I made to the “upgrade” to the print edition. This website went from looking very professional with easy to read colors and an organized visual structure to looking like someone’s teenaged son created a gossip website with the most obnoxious color schemes possible an no thought to visual composition. I agree with the posters above who said the new format hurts my eyes. It’s disorganized and fussy and unprofessional. Whomever is now in charge of this stuff needs to be reassigned because both new formats are epic fails.
