Itchy Legs

We have a cob who suffers malanders on her front legs. Every summer she stomps her back legs badly. There are no cuts or scabs or hard skin but she just seems to get itchy and on her belly. I know the obvious thing is mites but I don’t see and signs other than stomping and it stops in the winter. Any ideas or help before I seek the vet

Ground flax is supposed to be very good for horses that have bad reactions to insect bites. Depending on the size of the horse, you’d probably want to feed between a half cup to a full cup twice a day, and then cut back a bit on whatever grain the horse might be getting.

Does she have feathers on her leg? Feathers can hide all kinds of things–fungus, bacteria, bots, etc.

See if the can see down to her skin–if it seems irritated, you might consider clipping them. That doesn’t mean you can’t let them grow back but you might need to give a clean slate to treat.

I’m not sure where in the world you are, but where I am, it’s fly season and many horses stomp/kick for that reason. Fly boots can help!
