So I got my little guy back in December. He was in very poor condition but between his rescuer and now myself, he is gaining weight and looking much better. The vet came out and administered his first round of vaccines in January and diagnosed him with lice as the cause of his constant itching (thankfully he’d been kept away from all other horses/donkeys!) So I’ve treated him per her recommendations three times now with Permetherin powder.
He seems worse! He is rubbing so bad now that he has many bald patches. The patches I treat with a chlorhexidine wound wash and then cover w bag balm or an antibiotic cream. I don’t have any photos off hand but can get some. The rub marks are all the way down to bare skin, some even opened up.
I almost wondered if the Permetherin powder was making him more itchy?
My vet is coming back Monday but I wanted to reach out and ask for some COTH advice too.
It’s too cold to bathe (my hot water is down and it’s too cold outside anyway, North East US). When parting his super thick coat, his skin doesn’t appear to have rain rot but does look flaky/dry (or could be from powder build up?).
Adding ground flax to his high fat feed to help w overall condition but doesn’t seem to be helping with his skin/coat/itching (yet anyway).
Help me help him! Again vet coming out Monday but any advice welcome!
ETA: He was wormed once in Nov. before I got him (Ivermectin) and then when I got him I dosed him with Quest Plus as well.
