I have read on a few threads on here a suggestion to put a bit of ivermectin around/in a horses bum if they have itchy butt.
But, it doesn’t say how much or exactly what this treats. I’d assume pinworm?
I have a horse with a terribly itchy bum who I can’t seem to help. He had a fecal that was low count, was dewormed, has been on allergy meds, sheath cleaned, etc… nothing.
it’s definitely his butt too. Not the tail.
Yep. But after quite some time of dealing with what I thought was an itchy tail/butt with all traditional and nontraditional strategies, turns out he is trying to rub out muscle tightness in his hamstrings. Regular massage has made all the difference.
I should update by saying it worked. Itchy bum is no more. I don’t know exactly what it was that was the problem but I put about 200lbs dose worth of ivermectin around and a bit inside and it worked
Thanks for the update! I have a yearling filly with a very itchy butt, haven’t seen pinworms but possibly the eggs, so I just dewormed her with a double dose of ivermectin and am washing/cleaning it twice daily. Next is anti-itch cream and possibly the external ivermectin treatment!
Did you check her udder? Might be dirty and sweaty.
Yes, all the usual suspects have been checked and pinworms are about the only thing left. I just got her a few weeks ago from a breeder, so not sure if she came with them or picked them up here. And it is definitely her little bung hole specifically that itches, she lets me know that in no uncertain terms when I’m cleaning it! So if the direct ivermectin treatment doesn’t work, I’m going to have to suspect something in her feed. Is that even a possibility? That she could be eating something that makes her itchy on its way out?
Sometimes it takes double dosing pyrante pamoate (ie Strongid paste) even every couple weeks for 2-3-4 times to get control over an ivermectin-resistant population.
You may need to re-dose 2 weeks after the first dose. I’ve been through this w/my mare, and the Ivermectin did the trick.
Saw the nasty thing sticking out of her rectum this morning, so question has been answered. Poor filly was switching her tail fiercely when I went to feed her, so I looked and there it was. By the time I ran back to the tack room, grabbed my tube of ivermectin and made it back to her stall, she was still switching her tail and instead of the worm, there was the tell-tale yellow streak of eggs. I immediately stuck the tube in and dispensed about a third of it, then did the same to the eggs and all surrounding areas. I don’t know what, if anything, I killed, but I’ll check again in the morning for evidence. My filly immediately stopped with the switching and calmly finished her breakfast, though, so at least I know she felt better!
I had a horse rubbing his tail. He had ivermectin before I got him. Fecal came up at around 100 but vet had me power pack him. Still itching tail. I used ivermectin in and around anus. Had to repeat again about 5 weeks later and he was fine after that.
She was still very itchy this morning and even though I didn’t see anything, I used the rest of the Ivermectin in and around again. Hopefully that does the trick. I have some generic anti-itch (1% hydrocortisone) cream that I’ll start using now and see if that helps too.
Have you tried a heavy dose of fly spray starting from the tip of the tail ,up to the top, Make sure the top gets a good dose.
I’ve found it works like a charm.
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹It’s not worms but them flying biting things.
Looks like the Ivermectin enema worked on my filly, no more itchy bunghole! Now she’s wondering what the heck I’m doing back there, all up in her bidnez.
Fenbendazole also works on pinworms. If you buy the goat wormer, you can deworm 5 horses with it (at the low dose, not powerpac dose).
Anthelcide EQ works very well for killing specifically female pin worms that cause the butt itching. Usually solves the problem in a single dose and it isn’t outrageously expensive. I was advised of this by a vet from the state vet school.
Depends on the size of the bottle, and the weight of the horses.
A 125mL bottle only deworms 5 horses if they are no more than 1000lb, at the single 2.3mL/100lb dose
It comes in 250mL, 1000mL, and gallon bottles.
can anyone cite any sources for Ivermectin in the rectum? I’ve never heard anyone say this before this post.
I don’t think there’s any literature on it (though you could try google scholar) but I had seen it recommended on COTH forums before.
