Jack Van Berg article

He may not be a household name anymore. But he is still the real deal.

I’ve met the man a few times back in the 80s. Fortunately I was introduced by a mutual good friend of his. Which gave me a bit of “street greed” with him. “if you have done the walk, you can do the talk”. I admired him then and still do now. Wish I had a horse worthy of sending to him.

When asked about “The secret to his recent success?”

“I’ve changed my feed program. I’m feeding faster horses,” he said

Made me chuckle that’s usually how it works.

This made me chuckle also. Found it this to be true when I started out as a Bloodstock agent in the early 80s. Even more so now. Especially now that I am one of the “old guys”.

“I’m not going to cheat you and I’m not going to B.S. you,” he said. “If a horse can’t run, he can’t run. I’m going to tell you exactly the way it is. Funny thing in the horse business, I can show you the most successful people there are in outside businesses, and then they get into horse business and they’ll listen to the biggest B.S.-er around and get sucked in by them.”

“Youth” may have its advantages in some ares of the “job description” with some jobs/employment these days.

But age and experience will always trump youth when it comes to horses. Regardless of the discipline.

I’ve always had the utmost respect for him. I sure hope gets another derby winner.

I was blessed and honored to get to meet him at Kentucky Downs… I felt like a tongue-tied idiot speaking to him, and well, he didn’t seem to have any time for that nonsense.

I wrote him a fan letter in the 1980’s when he had Gate Dancer. I was a teenager and really getting into horse racing and I thought Gate Dancer was such a cool horse. Jack Van Berg sent me a very nice 8 x 10 color picture of Gate Dancer (autographed too!). I still have it somewhere.

I love the guy. Had to laugh about his comment about feeding for faster horses. He definitely looks like a man who cleans his feed bucket so he should know. Thanks for the thread.

Good read!

Mr Van Berg is a super nice person. He hangs right at the paddocks these days at Oaklawn, he has one of those little scooters, and so does his gal. He is very accessible. I have asked him questions a number of times this year and he has always been very polite and forthcoming, and I’m a nobody, he is just a very pleasant person. I liked a longshot of his and I told him about it before the race, he had twinkle in his eye when he said “he’s 35-1 now!!!” and the way he said it made me realize it wasn’t a good wager.

I got a kick out of “I don’t have to give a half a million for a horse or $300,000. I can pick a good one out for $50,000 or $60,000…” For sure, Mr. van Berg, for sure!

He loves this game.
