Jan Johnson horse abuse in San Joaquin area

I purchased the stallion AlReddyGotaCloseUp from them in September. He was in an emaciated state and lame. She called him Benson. This is him now.

Do you by chance remember him? I’d really like to know what he went through there. I’ve been working extremely hard to get his weight and muscle up and get him sound for showing. I’m super curious about his injury there. Thank you

He is absolutely stunning. That neck :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Great job getting him back in condition. I love his expression.

Who are his sire & dam? I handled Reddy Robin quite a bit, and probably know his dam or granddam. I worked for JJ nearly 20 years ago, so dont know your guy personally.

Thanks!

@Haliae I knew his both his sire and dam. Reddy (sire) was such a neat horse. Always a gentleman, easy to handle in a flat nylon halter. Had a beautiful, long sweeping stride and stamped that movement and neck on a lot of his babies. She crossed him on TB mares frequently, and he produced some really nice foals from that cross. Very similar in type to this guy <3

His dam, Candi Mooonshine, was a big solidly built bay TB mare. Her sire, Candi’s Gold, was a lovely horse and produced some nice “older style” TBs with good bone and nice short coupling. He stood at another local farm, Blooming Hills, and was also the sire of Military Gold, the stallion I mentioned upthread. Candi Moonshine produced a few foals I knew, in the 2001-2005 range. All a nice sporty type with good minds and good gaits. If your guy is anything like them, he can come live in my barn any time.

As far as what he went through there…here’s my best guess based on what I know of the situation at that farm:

When I arrived most of the foals were essentially unhandled. Pretty feral. They followed their dams to and from turnout, lived in stalls in a big mare motel barn. The handling they did get would be on the rough side, and from inexperienced “help”. (When you treat your people like crap, it’s hard to keep good hands around) She had weanlings and yearlings that weren’t halter broke. No hoof trimming, shots, deworming/fecals, etc. If a foal got injured, it learned to be handled while it was being treated for it’s injury. Extra fun (not).

I’d love to see more pics of your boy! I’ll look through my old pictures and see if I can find any of Reddy or CM or his siblings.

I’m not sure if this picture will work. It’s his damsire, Candi’s Gold, taken from the wayback machine

Bentley is super easy. Even lives next to my pregnant mare. Have ridden him bareback. Supposedly was started as a 3 year old, injured, and then sat. I got him in September 2024 and I jumped on him after 8 years off. No naughty. He’s such a sweetheart and I snuggle him every night.
He is by Reddy Robin out of Candi moonshine. I can’t wait for his first foal crop next year.
Look at my website at www.diamondeclipse.com and my Facebook page Jennifer Bolton for pictures and videos of him. I love him sooooooo much.

He is a very nice horse with some great Paint foundation bloodlines. I thought he’d been shown some as a 3-year old in HUS, but could be mistaken. I can look up his APHA record if you’re interested to see if he has any points.

I’m glad you have him and that he’s loved and cared for.

Interesting. So she’s not yet officially charged with animal cruelty. Yet those are coming. Right now it’s other angry, unhinged stuff. With a gun.

Didn’t you just love her lawyer’s comment? Something like, “She had a lot of old horses and old animals deteriorate, blahblahblah…”
