Jingles and prayers please for strangulating lipoma

Thank you….he WILL eat, just not Purina Equine Senior, which he’s never liked. He will rip grass out of your hand, and he devoured Unbertable Forage Blend out of my hand in front of her last night. I think the speculation of adhesions comes from ultrasound…they ultrasound him nearly every day and see sections of intestine that are moving slower than others. It is not always the same section. He gets a 5 minute hand walk twice a day. I walk him for 15-20 minutes when I’m there.

I honestly think she’s embarrassed about how she handled things initially and now wants to be right. She repeated “they are having the same problem I had-he won’t eat” except he will if given the chance.

@endlessclimb, I’ll get some TC Senior. He didn’t like it very well before but maybe now he will.

Blend some of the stuff he likes with it, of course! If he’s super ravenous, I’d think he might just go for it, fingers crossed.

That’s a good idea. I suggested dampening the dry feed last night…I just don’t think she is a good horse person….

If he will still eat it, I’d make it a warm soup for him. I would think that would help keep everything moving?

That is my plan for bringing him home. For the life of me, I don’t understand why the surgeon insists on feeding dry grain as opppsed to soup/slop or moist grass. I pick a large brown grocery bag of grass from the hay field every day. She gives him a handful every 4 hours. I don’t know how she thinks he can stay alive.

Well, whether or not he has adhesions, he will have ulcers shortly with that protocol.

I’m sorry this is getting so stressful. I’d ask them for their detailed one-week plan, in order to decide if he stays there or if he comes home.

That’s a good idea are: asking for a one week plan. When he came home the first time, she was to email a plan. It never showed up and last night, I learned her boyfriend had been in town. Perhaps that’s why she couldn’t get the discharge papers to me. (Sarcasm dripping here)

We treated my guy with ulcerguard as soon as he came home. Did the whole month treatment as we got it covered by insurance. He also did not want to eat at the clinic. I brought food from home and he was like meh, but he was all for the grass they were giving him a couple times a day. He was fed slowly upon returning home and he ate so much better once he got home. One flake of hay at various hours during the day and then slowly ramped up to his current/normal amount. We fed him very soft second cutting hay as we have a choice of different cuttings. We kept his grain to a minimum and ramped that up slowly. He also got his beet pulp mash at night. I had people helping me graze him twice a day for 10-15 min while he was on stall rest for a month. Really didn’t start hand walking him till the end of the first month.
I hope he feels better once he gets home.

I am so sorry your boy is having issues. :anguished:
Our guy coliced as soon as they started feeding him handfuls of hay in the hospital. After the second surgery, they got him on hay again, and I don’t recall him having any restrictions on feed by time he came home.

I am so sorry.

He may be a candidate for Purina Well-Solve Well-Gel, if your vet thinks so and thinks he must be on a complete-feed from Purina. I have used it twice personally. It is not cheap. The Well-Gel, like Senior feeds, is compounded to be complete feed.

I don’t understand why he needs to eat specifically Purina Equine Senior. If he was not eating it before why can’t you give him a senior feed he will eat?

I love this post and that picture of the two of you is simply spectacular. Incredible. He’s got heart - so much heart - you can see it.

My first horse had surgery for a strangulating lipoma. It was several years ago so I don’t 100% remember all the details at this point, but he was not fed that much grain. He got probably about 1/2 of the feed cups (not a human measuring cup) and then the rehab put it in a liter water pitcher and filled it up with water to soak it. He was fed every couple hours with a small amount of hay, and that grain slurry about 4 times a day. He was also given several weeks of ulcerguard. His refeeding schedule was intense and I couldn’t have managed it at home.

That’s incredibly frustrating. If you get any pushback from this surgeon about getting the plan or switching him to a feed he’ll eat, I’d ask to talk to the head surgeon or practice manager (if the manager is a vet, not an admin manager).

I’m so happy to hear Seven is recovering. I lost my heart horse to SL. It’s so insidious. Jingles for a complete recovery.

Here is my update: I called a friend at the vet school who investigated and intervened. He did not actually transfer to the person I’m not comfortable with. She is on service but not making decisions about his care. I’m not sure why she inserted herself…he is still in the care of the GREAT person who saved him.

He’s coming home today! He’s tolerating eating more food less frequently. I will receive guidance for care for coming home this time and I’m sure the follow up will be great.

Thank you all who have contributed your suggestions for re-feeding. You’ve given me things to ask about. And thank you all for your continued support…I wish I could meet you in person and hug each of you. Could you keep up w jingles and prayers a bit longer? I’m as nervous as a “long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs” and he will pick up on that. Thank you!!!
