Joe Kurz Wildlife Management Area, Meriwether Ga

Has anyone ridden here before? Someone was asking about it on FB but she did not get a response. I tried to get info online and could not find any related to horses.

Let me know if you have ridden there before!

Some years back lots of riders would ride there and then they stopped it.
From what I understand the hunters didn’t want us there even when it wasn’t hunting season. :frowning:

I’ve ridden there several times though it’s been a few years. Very flat and unchallenging, but pleasant. It’s pretty open so can be quite hot in the dead of summer if you going during the hottest part of the day. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another soul there each time I’ve been. They do periodically close it to horseback riders due to hunting or an event so it’s always best to check and see if it’s open to riders before heading over. I had called or emailed someone back the beginning of summer about riding one weekend as my sister and family live in Brooks, and it was open to riding. Unfortunately we wound up not going.

Thanks Fat Cat! Can you pm me who to call/email?

I rode there last weekend. Flat. Great for gaiting, or a nice big trot. You can ride on any WMA road that is open. We never entered a closed road (there are red signs) but we did pass a few closed signs over our shoulder. I talked to to the ranger and that is what they said. Ride on any open road.

We rode about 2 and a 1/2 hours. The hunters were very polite and one even asked if we were gettin ready to ride or if we were finished as he was training dogs and didn’t want them to chase the horses. we did wear those orange hunting jackets to be safe. They are about $3 at Walmart.

We saw a trophy sized buck and a nice smaller 6 pointer & two does. Loads of dove.

You are not supposed to ride in the fields as they have Turkey & other birds nesting. They will kick you out for that.

They must have a new ranger, the last one would only let us ride if we took a horse for him to ride. We used to get hay from those fields, but the wouldn’t renew the contract as they wanted to switch over to natural grasses rather than Bermuda

It should be good after all the rain we got too since it is flat. Every where else will be slicker than owl poop

Forgot to add the parking info. Take Mt Carmel to Germany road. You can only go one way. If heading south takea left, if heading north take a right. Go to Lodge Road turn left, you will se an open area that we are allowed to park in.
