Ugh…had MRA of both hips today. They blocked the right (the “good” side, that is now hurting, yay) and wouldn’t block the left–which hurts like a mofo. :frowning:

The resident called to check on how the block was working on the right and … dude … all I can really feel is the ridiculous pain on the left. I can’t even tell what’s going on with the right.

BOOOOO.

I couldnt even move my leg after the last mra, much less tell if a block helped!

Ha. Okay. Bright side? I could walk. Sort of.

That sucks!! Why wouldn’t they block the left? Blocking is the only thing about MRAs that is remotely pleasant!

Because they are mean :frowning:

(Blocking the right was supposed to be diagnostic. We already know the left is a problem, so no block. I have a few choice words that I 'm not allowed to share here!)

I haven’t read through all of this thread - but thought I would add that my hip issues led to combined driving. It’s a lot of fun!!

I had hip dysplasia that went undiagnosed for 5 years of repeated trips to multiple doctors and lots of PT. Hip dysplasia caused arthritis. I tried a periacetabular osteotomy. That worked wonderfully for about a year. But the little cartilage I had left just couldn’t hold up. I ended up with bilateral THR. I’ve had continuing pain ever since. Recently diagnosed with heterotopic ossification - bone growth in the muscle over my hips - aha! There is experimental surgery to remove it - no thanks. For now, I’ll deal. Tried additional pt, dry needling, acupuncture etc, but no improvement.

I suspect that most hip issues come from hip dysplasia or some other poor conformation (my daughter also has mild dysplasia and my son had surgery for fai. . There are very few orthopeds equipped to diagnose. I’m lucky to be near Boston. Dr. Michael Millis is my favorite doctor of all times. If you’re in New England and have hip issues, he’s the one.

MRI results:

Left hip suggestive of possible tear or breakdown of the graft from my labrum reconstruction
Right hip shows full thickness tear with separation

I do NOT want to do surgery again, but I am SO tired of being in pain.

I’m so sorry, Simkie. I know how much this news sucks.

Bummer, Simkie…

And I TOTALLY hear you about being tired of being in pain…I am at about 5.5 years on the bad leg and there were 2 really bad ones on the OTHER leg.

And I don’t think this last injection did a whole lot…for me, THR is looking better and better…if I can convince anybody ELSE it’s a good idea.

Mayo does THR in young people, Toller. I have not been super impressed with the care, but I think it’s a lot better if you don’t live here. It is the #1 hospital in the US for orthopedics.

If you’d like to come out, let me know, and I will ask around about the best THR guy. And maybe we could go have a beer

I’ll let you know - altho it might have to be multiple beers at this point!..right now it’s either try to get into see a guy here (they are in the top 100 for jt replacement), or go back to Houston.

Getting in to see the guy here is turning out to be a PITA…If I don’t get any better over the next month am going to try getting the guy I’m having manage it write a ‘yes, this person is in pain’ letter, but he seems to not want to go there unless I have arthritis on x-ray.

Houston will work - doc there said he’d write a referral when shots didn’t work anymore - but don’t really wanna do that…esp. having to get back across the country afterward…

What are they planning on doing for you? Or have you started those discussions yet?

PS - and it’s not like I’m ‘young’!!! I hit 60 next year!

I’m glad that you were able to do the surgery and hope that it helps! I have arthritis in my left knee at the ripe old age of 23…and it’s beginning to feel like the other knee is going to be heading that direction at some point as well. Just wondering…have you tried accupunture? It’s really helped manage my swelling and pain, both in the knee and other areas of the body. I also do Anna Forrest style yoga…might be something to look into after your recovery. You know that when something gets injured your other body parts tend to get strain injuries from compensation! good luck!!

My doc warned me at my last pre-op appointment that he doesn’t tend to spend much time with patients after surgery, because people tend to be too groggy to ask questions and they don’t tend to remember the conversation well.
I asked my surgeon if he had a brother.

OH NO! What?? What happened?

They scheduled me for a followup appointment with the surgeon in MID FEBRUARY. They do this by sending a piece of mail with the info, so there’s not even the chance to say “eff that shit, I need to be seen sooner.”

I at least got my appt with the pain people (which was also scheduled in mid Feb) moved up to next week. So maybe I can at least get on some meds for the pain. Gabapentin isn’t cutting it.

I also had a CT of the left. I wonder if the results are posted to the portal yet. Letsee…

Oh, joy. There’s a bone chip in there. FANTASTIC.

Holy hell, that sucks!

Though I must have missed something. So, after the surgery, your hip was still bothering you so you went in to get it checked again?
Going for either my 8th or 9th injection in the torn leg on Monday…also had at least 2 in the other leg while it was cratering.

Going to talk to a replacement guru in Feb to ask if I am setting myself up for any long term cortisone side effects by trying to ‘wait as long as possible’…

I’m actually starting to think a new hip for my birthday next fall might be a good present.
You may want to check out the Denver Clinic for Extremities at Risk. I had stem cell surgery in both knees done there.

Yeah, pretty much. It’s been getting worse since we moved. Had some injections in the spring (lower back & hip) which didn’t help. Didn’t get the impression the docs really really had any solution for me, or cared much at all, so spent the summer saying “nope” to the pain. Spent time in PT and with the acupuncturist, but my hip said HAHAHA SCREW YOU in the fall, and now we are here. Fun times.

Awh balls, I’m sorry!

Mine bug me quite a bit too but I’m still in the “ignore it” phase.
And go to Crossfit.

S**T, Simike!!! Bone chip??? And you’ve been walking???

Doctracy - I did do some research on stem cells in the hips…the results were pretty depressing.

Latest injection didn’t do anything - PLUS the torn bit got stuck in the joint for about 2 weeks. Right now I need a cane in the house or on hills, where I usually use 2 sticks (walking in long straight lines on the flat isn’t too bad…).

Am giving reactivation exercises a few weeks, and then going back to the doc and seeing if we can do an MRA to get a better idea of the cartilage damage. And THEN going to start talking to replacement docs.

I MIGHT be able to wait till fall to get the replacemet done, but waiting years till my x-rays catch up ain’t happenin’!
