Yo! Are you doing Regenexx? I did that in late April…incredibly unpleasant experience. HOWEVER my hip is no longer bothering me unless I really abuse it. I had a labral tear and minor arthritic changes on MRI.
previously the longest I had gotten from a cortisone shot was 6 mos, and the last few were only 4 mos.
they did PRP on the SI in the same side, and also on the gluteus medium tendon, they are both much improved as well!
Haaaaahahahaha. Yes. Yes, I sure do. I file the Brian hip surgeons by color, mentally. Obviously missed a translation when typing it out   Are you telling me that Kelly is the stereotypical thinks-he’s-gods-gift orthopod? I’ve dealt with enough of those, don’t need anymore. I hear Bharam is very good with patients. I think I need to see someone who has spent time with Philippon at this point, not someone fellowed by association. Feel free to PM me if you have dish on Green, er, Kelly
toller, no Regenex. How fantastic you’ve had such good results with it! Have heard interesting things, but no one does it around here. The cocktail my guy is proposing is truly a longshot…throw everything at it and see if anything sticks…and he’s doing it at his cost. Really, chances of helping are pretty low I suspect that the sticking point with the biologics is that I no longer have my own labrum. Is the graft “alive”? Is it functioning? Who knows! There’s a whole school of thought among arthroscopic hip surgeons that labral reconstruction is hogwash, that the implant never integrates and that it just dissolves over time. Obviously the guys who do reconstruction dispute that. Hard to say who is right.
Finally got to try out my resurfaced hip. Mounted my fiery old TB mare from the ground unassisted. Rode around our new farm for the first time, horse and rider in mothballs for 3 years. She jigged, gnashed her teeth, did a wheel and bolt at one point. Trial by fire but it was great to be back in the saddle. I’m Baaaaaack…
As a vaulter, I could grab mane and be up there without strain.
That was decades ago.
Don’t try to get on from the ground now, even with short horses, not after shoulder surgery.
Thanks BLuey, Yes it might not have been ideally planned out and my horsemanship might not be that great. I trusted my own judgment after considering a few options. I tend to get paralyzed by analysis so it was better for me to just get it over with on my own terms.
My anecdote was trying to show that its possible to get a hip fixed so well that you don’t have to baby it or fear the unknown. I can see now that it looks like foolish bragging.
Well. MRA last Thursday. I thought it looked pretty abnormal, and the radiologist has read fraying of the labrum all the way around. Sigh. Will see what the orthos say about it :-/
Glad your resurfacing is working for you. I’ve had my Birmingham 10 years today. Be careful … don’t over do it. I felt so good a month post… I sprained the hamstring taking steps two at a time again. That hurt for a while, but kept reminding me to be careful. Let your body heal and get acclimated to the increased activity.
I’ve skimmed parts of this thread since I did something to my hip a couple of months ago. Saw the orthopedist today and got a diagnosis of femoroacetabular impingement + probable labral tear. PT and injection are scheduled. The doctor spent more time talking about arthroscopy than suited my tastes (well, my hopes). Mostly just wanting to vent right now but will be reading through the thread and will likely have some questions for you all in the near future.
I was trying to ride lightly but haven’t ridden in a month once it became clear that my youngster realized I wasn’t at full competency and started to see how much he could get away with. I decided it was better for his training and my hip to not ride at all than ride poorly, but man am I cranky not riding. Glad to have this thread to learn from and commiserate…
@Risuena very sorry to hear if your recent diagnosis The injection your doc is talking about is a block into the hip joint to confirm your pain is coming from the labral tear.
I highly (highly highly) recommend exploring biologic injectable options before going to surgery. PRP, stem cell, Regenexx…whatever. It will be some dollars–all of that stuff is out of pocket–but has very little risk for harm and a good potential to make you feel better. Surgery is far from a guarantee, and you can’t go back.
In other news, I saw my local guy to review the MRI today and he’s impressed with how good it looks, even though he agrees with the radiologist that it’s not normal. Moving forward with the stem cell/prp/ha plan, although really fairly guarded that it will help. There is just nothing else in his playbook before total hip replacement.
I have an appt with one of the hot shit NYC hip arthoscopists Friday. I am doubtful he will have anything new to say, but it’s a box I feel I have to check.
Thanks @Simkie! Yep, he explained to me that it would be therapeutic + diagnostic, and he did a good job of explaining that based on my symptoms a labral tear fits but it’s not 100% certain. Thanks for mentioning the other options - I had thought to myself “I wonder how often they do PRP or anything like that in people”? so it’s good to know that they do – I’ll start researching that so I’m prepared if it comes to that. I reaaaaaaly want to avoid surgery, and since this is “relatively” new, I doubt I’ll agree to that until I’m convinced that nothing else works.
Good luck with the stem cell/prp/ha - I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you and will following!
As far as surgery being far from a guaranteed and not something you can undo, I’m living proof. Things were bad enough that I was willing to do surgery … and now they’re worse. @Risuena I hope your doc is open to biologics and trying non-surgical optioins. I think some of the scalpel jocks push for surgery and have themselves convinced that the odds of a favorable outcome are a bit higher than what’s realistic. Good luck finding something that will help without having to resort to that!
@Simkie , did the NYC hip guy have any new insights regarding your situation? I’m glad to hear that your local guy thinks the MRA looks better than expected. And I’ve got my fingers crossed that the biologics hail mary will keep you out of the OR for a while yet. But it would be even better if the NYC hot shot has some familiarity with the repair that was attempted before and has something new and promising to add to that conversation…
@x-halt-salute I am (impatiently, haha!) waiting to hear back from the NYC guy on some imaging we did. Overall the visit was stellar–he was very thoughtful and thorough. They were able to get me in for a CT and radiographs within an hour at their imaging center a few blocks away, despite insurance hurdles. His support staff were amazing. The films look weird to me, but I’m no radiologist. Not sure if he’ll have any answers, but MAN do I ever feel HEARD.
Thanks @x-halt-salute. I just finished reading through this thread the other day and was struck at some of the similarities…I’m not inclined to go back and find the specific posts, but there were a few descriptions that I could have written myself. Mine started out as what I thought was a groin strain, then got worse and spread to the hip. I’m lucky in that my pain seems generally more mild than most of you - it’s usually not too bad, just a bit sore, but I get periodic stabbing pain in my hip that only lasts for a second but is excruciating. I’ll be more sore for a while after that, but I gradually improve until it happens again. I haven’t been on my horse in a month.
We didn’t go into detail about surgery since it was my first visit, but the impression I got from my doctor was that he simultaneously might push for surgery but was not all that optimistic, ha. He seemed to think that I’ll likely need it but told me the expected outcome was maybe 75% of perfect, not 100%. So I guess it’s good that he’s realistic and not blowing smoke? BUT we are a looooooong way from going there. I will definitely push for non-surgical options, especially after reading some of the stories on here. Ugh, I feel so frustrated.
I am struck at how much muscle involvement there is. I’ve gone to 3 PT sessions now, and the difference in my muscles on my right side compared to my left is striking. He’s been dry needling me - has anyone else had that done? I’m a very “evidence-based” person so had low expectations, but I’m starting to think that it is helping my muscle tightness/spasms a bit. Figure it can’t hurt and might help, so we’ll see.
I’m traveling for the next week (Japan OMG!!!) and am hoping that the walking & sitting doesn’t aggravate it too much. Was going to ski but am now looking at alternatives. (Snow Monkeys?). After I get back I head out on some work travel, and I get injected once I’m back. I just hope I’ll be able to ride after the injection!
