I have a 14-15yr old cat who is getting rather stiff. She is also rather fat, which doesn’t help things, but there isn’t really anything I can do about that, since I have 5 other cats, all younger, and they all eat from one central container.
Anyone know of a joint supplement for cats in maybe a treat form?
I very much like cosequin for cats, you sprinkle it on their food and its very palatable. One of mine has elbow arthritis quite bad, and since beingon the cosequin he hasnt taken a lame step. Also works great for cats with chronic cystitis. Pretty cheap too - I think 2 months worth is about $25
Getting the weight off of her would probably do far more than a joint supplement to make her comfortable.
Switching to wet only would probably take care of the issue, but if you have to feed dry for some reason, try feeding the cats a fixed amount twice a day instead of free feeding.
I feed dry because, with 5 active cats (and 1 plump one), wet food would break me.
Also, difficult to feed on a time-table as these are indoor/outdoor cats. They come in and out of the house as they please.
And I agree of course, getting the weight off of her would help, but she just isn’t that active anymore. Used to be THE best hunter in the group, but these days she is much less busy…
On the other hand, if she doesn’t hurt as much she might be more active:lol:
My 14yo cat is on green lipped mussel extract pills. While it’s probably not going to work as well as an actual arthritis medicine, he has kidney failure and so playing around with extra meds just wouldn’t be a good idea for him. He went on them because he was starting to look like he didn’t like jumping up onto the bed / couch that much any more, and it does seem to have helped some.
Plus - it’s super yummy treat time for him, so he never complains! I give him his kidney meds, and then he knows the mussel pill is coming.
Its 1-2 pills per day (its called “Cosequin for cats”), it works out to be about 125-250mg glucosamine hydrochloride and 100-200mg sodium chondroitin sulfate. I just give my cat a bit of wet food with it sprinkled on top. Its super cheap too…I thought it was$25 for 60 pills, but its for 80. I would start with the higher dose for a week, then go to 1 pill daily and see how she does. Mine does great with the lower dose.
I give my oldest cat Cosequin on an ounce of canned people tuna. (the other cats split the other two ounces) They eat their little portions quickly and have learned to all congregate at 9 pm on the dot. Amazon carries it so I dont have to make a trip.
After reading the various reviews on the GLyco-Flex, I ordered the bite size DOG ones – apparently the exact same ingredients, but they are just bigger.
So I can break the dog ones in half for kitty and save myself some $$. Ordered 120 for $32.99 – free shipping!
