Joint Supplements for Cats?

I have a 14-15yr old cat who is getting rather stiff. She is also rather fat, which doesn’t help things, but there isn’t really anything I can do about that, since I have 5 other cats, all younger, and they all eat from one central container.

Anyone know of a joint supplement for cats in maybe a treat form?

Thanks!

I very much like cosequin for cats, you sprinkle it on their food and its very palatable. One of mine has elbow arthritis quite bad, and since beingon the cosequin he hasnt taken a lame step. Also works great for cats with chronic cystitis. Pretty cheap too - I think 2 months worth is about $25

Yes, but I need some thing I can just give to HER, as all of the cats eat from one dry feeder.

I could give her some extra canned food, but the last thing she needs is more food!

She’s a calico loaf of cat as it is…

Getting the weight off of her would probably do far more than a joint supplement to make her comfortable.

Switching to wet only would probably take care of the issue, but if you have to feed dry for some reason, try feeding the cats a fixed amount twice a day instead of free feeding.

I feed dry because, with 5 active cats (and 1 plump one), wet food would break me.

Also, difficult to feed on a time-table as these are indoor/outdoor cats. They come in and out of the house as they please.

And I agree of course, getting the weight off of her would help, but she just isn’t that active anymore. Used to be THE best hunter in the group, but these days she is much less busy…

On the other hand, if she doesn’t hurt as much she might be more active:lol:

If you start feeding on a time table, you’ll have cats that will appear when it’s time to be fed, I promise

My 14yo cat is on green lipped mussel extract pills. While it’s probably not going to work as well as an actual arthritis medicine, he has kidney failure and so playing around with extra meds just wouldn’t be a good idea for him. He went on them because he was starting to look like he didn’t like jumping up onto the bed / couch that much any more, and it does seem to have helped some.
Plus - it’s super yummy treat time for him, so he never complains! I give him his kidney meds, and then he knows the mussel pill is coming.

What is the dose for the Cosequin? Maybe I could give her just a TBSP of canned…

You are probably right…but I’m pretty bad about time-tables these days since I’m retired. No body eats on any particular schedule…including me!

I suppose I could put the free-feeder out in the barn…she doesn’t go there too much anymore…

Its 1-2 pills per day (its called “Cosequin for cats”), it works out to be about 125-250mg glucosamine hydrochloride and 100-200mg sodium chondroitin sulfate. I just give my cat a bit of wet food with it sprinkled on top. Its super cheap too…I thought it was$25 for 60 pills, but its for 80. I would start with the higher dose for a week, then go to 1 pill daily and see how she does. Mine does great with the lower dose.

I give my oldest cat Cosequin on an ounce of canned people tuna. (the other cats split the other two ounces) They eat their little portions quickly and have learned to all congregate at 9 pm on the dot. Amazon carries it so I dont have to make a trip.

Glyco flex

There is a product called Dasuquin you could talk to your vet about.

Valley Vet has the best price that I’ve found on Cosequin for cats:

I have good luck using it with one of my old barn cats.

I currently have 16 cats. Not a single one has turned down Joint Max.

Thank you!! That is exactly what I’ve been looking for!

But the big question-- does it work? How successful has it been for you?

Was all excited about this product too, but it seems it is only available through vets…

Huh? http://www.amazon.com/Glyco-Flex-Feline-Bite-Sized-Chews-60-Count/dp/B002LVTTXA

Cool — and thanks. The other link posted only gave vet names as distributors.

Thanks to all – I’ll give one of these a try.

After reading the various reviews on the GLyco-Flex, I ordered the bite size DOG ones – apparently the exact same ingredients, but they are just bigger.

So I can break the dog ones in half for kitty and save myself some $$. Ordered 120 for $32.99 – free shipping!

Thanks – I’ll let you know how it works.
