Looking once again for recommendations for joint supplements for the PICKY dog! Based on prior COTH suggestions, I’ve tried both Cosequin and Phycox Max and my elderly dog won’t touch either of them. So, any others I should try out? She’s a finicky dog who is too smart for her own good and knows in an instant if I’m trying to disguise the taste of something…really need to find something she likes.
Nuvet is what I feed all my dogs. They make a basic supplement and another with the joint supplement that works quite well on my older dogs. I really like these products. I break the tablet in half and just mix in with food. I have never had a problem with them spitting it out. My old Irish Setter could spot a foreign object in her food bowl from 20 paces and would promptly pick it out and spit it on the floor. She never had a problem with these.
When my old gal stopped eating Phycox Max, I switched her to Glycoflex 3 and she ate it until she stopped. Now we’re back to Phycox Max again. You have to keep trying different things.
Also I’ve had good results with Lubrisyn- HA- 1 TBS. per day syringed into her mouth.
VOSM recommended to us to go with Dasuquin Advanced. My sheltie seems to love them and she chipmunks her other meds to spit out behind our back so she is a bit discerning.
Although Dasuquin is fairly similar to Cosequin plus ASU and a few other things so I don’t know if the taste would be that dissimilar.
My dog loved the Acti Flex Canine. It’s a flavored liquid and I put it on his food, and he snarfed it right down like it was gravy. The horse version is pina colada flavored and my horse thinks it’s frosting…always eats it off the top of his food first, then eats the rest.
Thanks for all of the suggestions!
Synovi chews are very palatable. Never seen even the picky eaters refuse it. I think it helps that they’re softer chews and they’re apparently very tasty
I’ll have to remember that one, so far she’s eating the Glycoflex well but I’m sure she’ll start boycotting it at some point and I’ll need to switch her again
My dog did well on pentosan injections. Dirt cheap too.
