Joint Support

Oh great minds of coth,
tell me of the best joint supplements I can use for my 9 year old lab.
Personnel experience would be so appreciated.
He’s getting to that age and I want to be proactive.
And there are SO MANY Choices.
Please help me.

I have used Dasuquin w/MSM on my 8.5 year old Doberman for several years now (maintenance dose). He’s done very well on it and is super sound - still moves and maneuvers like a young dog in the prime of his life. My guy is a retired show dog, but he can easily hang with the youngsters when I show him in the veteran class once or twice a year. Been very happy with it.

Dasuquin Advanced is my favorite oral joint supplement as well as fish oil. You might also consider Hills j/d which is a absolutely excellent food that has everything you need in terms of joint supplement and fish oil.

Thank You

Personally I think oral joint supplements are a waste of money. Numerous studies have shown that virtually none of the active ingredients actually make it to the joints. IM injectables are slightly better. Joint injections are the “best” option, other than the cost and risks.

Everyone has examples of oral supplements making a dog or horse feel better, or an older animal that is still sound because they’ve been on a supplement. I get the feeling of wanting to help. But do some research. There are studies with glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, MSM, etc. And none of them have shown noticeable improvements in vivo or in vitro.

Your best bet? Don’t let your dog get overweight, keep them active while reducing high impact and sudden start/stop movements, and pick puppies from breeders with lines known for soundness and longevity.

Cetyl-M is the only one I repurchased for my tiny elderly dog. Tried Glycoflex 2 & 3 and Doggone Pain before that.

Phycox and Dasuquin are my picks. Aged corgi started being able to hop in to the SUV again once we started her on Phycox

Regarding the oral supplements not being effective; in my experience they do work. I had a lab who had a partial tear of her cruciate(sp?) ligament and was limping around for a while. I started her on chondroitin with MSM and in two weeks, she was sound as a dollar. She was on 1,000 mg a day (big dog) for the rest of her life. If she went off the meds, within a week she was back to limping. I am a firm believer however, YMMV.

Phycox seems to be working just fine for my 7-year-old GSD, but I’m always looking for the “next best thing.”

Our ortho vet has us on Dasuquin Advanced and fish oil.

Phycox worked well on my GSD for a couple years then stopped helping so I switched her to Glycoflex3 and it was

great until it also stopped helping.
