Jojo's Gal and I

Update on us!

I rode Jo for the first time yesterday! We kept it short because there was no one at the barn to be found. Lol. I can’t walk her down to the ring myself and I didn’t want to tempt any major mishaps.

So, I did walk her up and down twice where I’ve been handwalking her. It’s a decent little jaunt - I’d say a quarter mile each way. We’ll need to work on mounting. She’s a big girl (16.2-3) and I’m not (5’4 ish) so…

She did get a little nervous once at birds that took off but no running. She just sidestepped. Not even quickly. I was able to keep a pretty loose but even rein on her.

A couple observations:

I had to use my warmblood girth on her. [IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:“none”,“data-size”:“full”,“src”:"https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/fd0/1/16/1f602.png). She’s big.

My bridle is cob sized with a horse browband. Lol

She’s unofficially 2 full hands taller than the last horse I leased (a warmblood in Germany) was. So my saddle suddenly did make me feel like I was a jockey sitting on her until I got myself adjusted.

Success. She was a very good girl and did not take one wrong step.

So she got some time afterwards to hand graze today.

Yesterday marked our first full week together. [IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:“none”,“data-size”:“full”,“src”:"https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/f68/1/16/1f495.png)

I am looking around at closer boarding options. Where I have her boarded is suitable, and I like the barn manager. But I feel I can find somewhere closer here in town and am looking either at the place up the street from me or somewhere on hunt country - which is only about 5 miles away. Our plan is to begin trail riding and eventually (if she is 1. able and 2. suitable) foxhunting, at least hilltop). That is, if I’m physically able to as well.

The barn where we are just doesn’t have many folks that I’d be able to hack out with to work on those skills together with. I think being here local in Camden, I’d be better suited to work on that with her. I don’t have a trailer — yet. LOL

Good start for us!

It’s nice to hear that you’re taking it slow! It sounds like she’s adjusting well. There’s something to be said for close boarding barns. I used to be 20 minutes away from my barn, and now I’m looking at 5 minutes, which is so much better. I don’t know how some people drive 1 hour or more to their horses, I couldn’t do it!

Gosh, me either!!! I rode her yesterday all the way down to the arena. It’s pretty much all like a trail since the roadway has a lot of rock. I had one of the students walk with me just in case…not that she’d be able to stop us. But, she would at least be able to run and get help.

I found a closer barn, it’s about 8 minutes away! And I will be able to have some money taken off my board by helping feed on the weekends they show! No biggie since I’m at the barn all the time anyway! There are only six horses and Jo will be seven. Win win! It’s also right next door to the Camden Hunt club…score! Lots of trails through there!

But the best part will be is being able to work a little more with my girl…we are having so much fun with our bonding. I even got a nicker out of her yesterday. It was like heaven to me.
