Juan Matute Guimon

This is so upsetting. I really hope he pulls through and is ok. :frowning:

It appears this could be potentially be related to the virus? The way some people (who I think know him personally) were posting about it on social media, it seemed like that was possible. He’s so young - it’s unbelievable.

Edited - I looked this up further and seems like they don’t know what happened, other than he suffered from a stroke. I mentioned whether this could be virus related, because of the recent information that a small number of relatively young, otherwise asymptomatic people are apparently suffering strokes from Covid-19. So utterly horrifying. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Sending healing wishes from Colorado.

I’m sure he’ll be tested. It is indeed an alarming mechanism that the Covid virus is presenting in asymptomatic or mildly ill younger people. For those who haven’t read about the issue; https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/929345

Also sending healing thoughts. The possible virus connection didn’t occur to me until reading this, but given he has been living in Spain, which was hard hit, it may be. The article I read said he had headaches in the last week but thought it was allergy related. My heart aches for his family.

This is incredibly sad. Prayers for him and his family. He’s a lovely, lovely rider and I greatly enjoyed watching him at Global this past winter.

I did read an article in the Washington Post last week that major strokes in younger people is something that hospitals are seeing in relation to Covid. These people often don’t present with any symptoms or very limited symptoms of Covid, but then end up with massive large vessel occlusions. I am not saying this is what happened to Juan, but it isn’t outside the realm of possibility. More than anything, I’m sharing this article because it is incredibly important that people seek medical help IMMEDIATELY if they have any symptoms of a stroke (like a headache that doesn’t go away for days) as outcomes are dependent on how quickly someone is treated.

Hm, I don’t think it says he had a stroke? A brain bleed sounds more like a possible aneurism or something? But I am no medical expert. It sounds extremely serious. Jingles for his full recovery.

Brain hemorrhage is a type of stroke.

Yes there are two different type of stroke, blockage ( ischemic) and hemorrhagic. This may have been the second. These types of bleeds can evolve from a birth defect of the arteries in the brain. Such a tragic situation. I echo Epona, if you are having “the worse headache ever”, see a doctor promptly

I too have been praying for him, and was shocked to see the news. Only the day before, he had been happily posting on Instagram. I’ve followed him for some time, and as well as a horseman, I loved the fact that he was posting all sorts of cheery content about learning to play the guitar on his social media, rather than complaining about things being closed. He has such a wonderful sense of humor, as well is a great rider.

Such a thing is awful under any circumstances, but particularly someone so young who seemed to be making such a contribution to the sport.

Here is his Instagram page:

Carl Hester was moved enough to post that he was praying for him.

I admit that COVID-related issues were my first thought, given Spain has been so hard-hit by the virus and because of his age and evident health, though I do know of rare instances of young people having strokes before this. It’s just become more common, because of the virus.

Thank you for the update! I’m glad they were able to stop the bleeding in his brain and that he tested negative for COVID-19, so at least he won’t have any additional issues associated with the virus, and his friends and family can be with him as much as possible.

Eurodressage reports Matute Guimon’s second surgery was successful. The article contains a good explanation of Arteriovenous Malformation as well.

Link was “unapproved”.
