Jump Cups

I need more jump cups. I don’t seem to be able to find a source online, because I am not very “tech” savvy. Here is my story.

40 years ago, we ran a little local horse show, and my Dad welded up jump cups, taking a pattern off what we saw in use at the time. I still have most of them, they have two little posts that stick into holes in face of the standards that are 3 inches apart. They have either a mildly curved cup, and a few flat ones for planks and panels. They have lasted really well, poles roll out of them adequately over the years to keep everyone safe, and I have been through numerous sets of standards that have been drilled appropriately to accommodate them. I love them. They are probably not “legal” for horse shows any more, but that’s OK, I’m comfortable with their use at home.

I’ve bought several different types of plastic cups, which are what is available commercially, to supplement the metal ones as required. One type was pretty heavy duty, and has lasted well. I can’t find any more like these. In desperation, I bought some lighter duty ones, and without the “breakaway” option that was offered at the time (much to the dismay of the sales clerk), but they break so easily that most are destroyed. They break if a horse just taps the pole. Then, I am out of jump cups. So I looked into buying more jump cups recently. I found that these were the ONLY ones available that I could find, AND they are now $25 per pair, for 50 cents worth of recycled plastic which breaks if you look at it wrong. I don’t want to buy them again. I want the jump pole to roll out of the cup if necessary without breaking it. Is that too much to ask?

My question is, does anyone have a source of GOOD plastic jump cups? My standards are “double drilled” with holes, so I can still use my old steel jump cups, AND drilled through from the sides for the pins for the plastic cups, so I can use both. If I can’t get some decent plastic cups, I’m looking at getting a local welder who works cheap to take a pattern off the old metal ones, and make me some more of those.

I have no intel about commercially available jump cups. I like your idea of talking to a welder. Also look for a local tech school or high school class that might make them for the cost of materials.

Honestly I’d get some metal ones welded. We bought some plastic ones for my club because they are ‘safer’ but they were $25 a pair. My coach still uses the metal ones someone welded her a million years ago and they’re still going strong. I much prefer them to screwing around trying to put those stupid pins through standards. In my opinion, if you fall on a standard or cup, it’s going to hurt regardless of what it is made of.

I’ve always thought these things looked pretty cool. No pins to lose, unlikely to break since they’re all metal? And less than $25 a pair!

Googling around, these turned up. Even simpler design, and that price?! Wonder if they’d ship to the US? Might be worth asking!

might want to send crosscreeksh a pm…they are relocating and have a pile of jumps they are wanting to depose of… I think at one time she had about 40 sets of cups she was wanting to depose of

Jacks manufacturing makes great heavy duty plastic cups with great pins.

Thanks for the responses. For some reason, my computer won’t bring up ANY of the links provided, and I have no idea why, because if I can’t type and press “send”, I am lost with computers. Looks like engaging the services of the local welder is my best bet. I just have to wait until he gets his substantially dead tractor resurrected out of his hay field before I ask him, because everyone only needs so many demands on his brain and stress levels at one time. @DunByMistake , I feel the same about metal jump cups… landing face first into standards is gonna hurt no matter what cups are used, and I’ve managed to avoid doing this for a number of decades so far. There is a certain risk involved with jumping horses, and one has to accept that. It’s not like I’m one of those 3DE people who jumps stuff that doesn’t knock down if things go badly. @Scarlet Gilia that is a good idea about the tech school, unfortunately I live so remotely, in such a tiny town, that this isn’t a possibility for me. Wish it was, though!

Go to TheTackRoomOnline.com They have the Jacks cups that you will love and cherish forever, I promise

Ah, those are the black plastic cups that I have that I LIKE and that have not broken, but can’t find locally any more. So THAT’s what they are called. I have asked if they will ship to Canada. Thanks.
