I finally have time to repair and dress up my jumps. What is your favorite product to fill splits in poles/standards? Is it better to paint stripes or what type of tape do you prefer for wood poles? Any tips appreciated!
Not jump poles (mine are PVC), but I used wood putty to repair a broken block of wood - 4X4? - that holds the latch to a stall front.
Years later, my repair is still holding & latch is in use at least a dozen times daily.
Instead of painting, I used colored tape on my poles. 20+yrs later still in good shape.
Not duct tape, sorry, can’t recall exactly, but it’s vinyl & was from a Dover catalog.
I have yet to find a painter’s tape that will give me really crisp edges for stripes on my octagonal pressure treated wood jump poles. But from a distance they look just fine.
I live with smaller cracks in the wood and just paint heavily over them. For larger ones I use an outdoor caulk. And if the crack is deep i pack it with an oakum product before applying caulk. Make sure to buy caulk that is labeled as paintable.
According to the internet for painting walls, you’re supposed to put the tape on, paint the color that’s next to your stripe, let it dry, then paint your stripe color.
You can also caulk over the painters tape edge for the same effect (not so useful on poles, very useful when painting door trim at home).
I didn’t bother with the double painting the tape as the lines look fine unless you’re within 2ish feet and when you’re on a horse you certainly can’t tell
