Jump Start by AP Indy

Anyone have any experience with any horses by Jump Start by AP Indy? I found one I’m salivating over and I’m trying to talk myself into (or out of) trying to go and see him this weekend or next week. I adore his damline about a much as it is possible to and I’ve always head great things about AP Indy and Jump Start looks lovely. He is out of a Storm Cat mare which I have mixed feelings about, but she is out of a Hopespringseternal daughter and by Mr. P which I feel very good about.

Anyway, would love some info!

I will just say that I LOVE Jump Start and his offspring. The three horses that I’ve been serious about before I got my latest ottb were all by Jump Start. The one I did end up getting is Jump Start on the dam side (Skywalker on the top side). I just seem to be drawn to them. My four year old is very sweet and has a great mind. I would say her movement is average, but she’s very athletic and balanced. I’m sure you are already aware of Ichabad Crane that Phillip Dutton is riding/competing by Jump Start?

Ahhh. No! I was not aware of that. I remember watching that horse and liking him a lot but I didn’t realize that is who he was by. Vilas County is by Jump Start as well.

Dammit. I was kind of hoping someone would say “No they are mean and horribly unsound!” because I DON’T. NEED. ANOTHER. HORSE. But gosh I think this one is niceeeee. Maybe I need to head up to see him this weekend after all.

Jump Start is very high on my list. I raised a Jump Start filly (born 2008) out of a Thunder Gulch mare and she was absolutely lovely in every way. Very smart and classy, well put together. She was quite a nice mover, too. She sold for $8500 as a yearling at Keeneland (photo) and went on to win $250K, G3 placed. She retired last year and brought $170,000 as a broodmare prospect…way out of my price range!

I’ve kept my eye on other Jump Starts at the sales, and the majority of them are similar-- really nice types. Icabad Crane, the former stakes winner now with Phillip Dutton, is also by Jump Start.

Jump Start was bred by Overbrook farm, where he stood until the farm dispersed. His dam, Steady Cat, had a typical Storm Cat look about her, but her female family is very deep. And of course I love anything A.P. Indy. Jump Start hasn’t had super awesome success on the track (though Prayer For Relief is fantastic) and he’s a regional sire (PA) now, so his offspring shouldn’t be out of reach for the sport horse market.

sorry  Honestly, I’ve fallen in love with each one I’ve seen. Very attractive and very sweet.

Wasn’t there a Jump Start horse that was a contender in the triple crown races this year?

I’ve worked with many by him and with his dam. They’re just like any other pedigree, some hot, some pretty laid back, most very flashy.

Attractive and sweet sounds spot on. He’s still a stud but apparently very easy to handle and I’ve got a soft spot for stallions. On top of that he is just the type I like wrapped up in plain solid bay which is about as perfect as it gets. He’s 8, which is a little older than I ideally want, but I’m super happy with the 8yr old mare I bought off the track this winter and I think there is something to be said for still sound and clean legged after 45 starts.

Guess I’ll try and go see him and see if I can make it work from there!

Icabad Crane was bred by a friend of mine and I always thought he’d make a super riding horse.

Almost every Jump Start I’ve known was pleasant and athletic. They seem to get the AP Indy aptitude. (Indy being a Bold Ruler sireline stallion from a dam who also traces tail male to BR, they are generally good jumpers.)

I like him a ton…but his stud fee is still too high for us sport horse breeders! Would love to breed certain of my TB mares to him. Oh well…I’m considering another AP Indy son instead (Rockslide). I actually like Rockslide’s pedigree for sport better and I have a daughter who is outstanding (although she comes from a really good dam line as well).

Maybe Jump Start’s stud fee will come down in a few years

I do think, to a certain extent, there is a jumping ‘nick’ for AP Indy/SC. Any SC/AP baby I’ve ever seen has been a hedgehunter.

This is probably silly, but what do you mean by hedgehunter? I’m not familiar with that phrase outside of the finance world!

a really good/game jumper. it probably comes from the linebreeding to secretariat.

I do like Rockslide as well. I wasn’t exactly thinking Jump Start for sport horse breeding…more like you’ll find them available OTT rather than sent to the shed. But you never know unless you ask!

I bred my TB sport mare to a Phipps-bred son of Pulpit for far less than the advertised stud fee, though I had an “in” with the farm owner. I’ve heard others have bred to a few TB stallions for sport, and those particular farms have been relatively accommodating so long as the stallions have light books.

Even though I only OWN one OTTB, I’ve learned so much in the three years I’ve had him as I’ve had a blast learning more about pedigrees and am getting to where I can just about pick an AP Indy/Mr P horse on sight, ROFL.

I know some people would go AGGGGH, Slew on both sides AND Mr. P! But he is awesome in brain and body after 3 years on the track and he was with a good trainer who maintains a relationship with CANTER. Cool discovery of AP Indy horses – his damline goes back to the eventer-producing legend, My Babu, the damsire of Gay Missile (poor horse, what a terrible name)!

Ok, he is accident-prone, but I don’t think that has anything to do with his breeding, hahaha, just his insistence on keeping my life, er, exciting. Even my vet is impressed because there is nothing wrong with him, his hocks and stifles are pristine, he just manages to pull of juuuust enough to get out of work (bruise a foot, itch self on poky objects, stupid crap!).

Anyway, sorry for ADD rambling – his sire was also an AP Indy stallion, bred for the turf, so my boy got awesome bone, being about 1/4 English/Irish/French blood (mine ran on dirt and grass). His dam was also a Mr. P grand-daughter through a nice stallion who apparently throws nice jumpers.

You might enjoy an ongoing project I have on my blog’s Pinterest board (never got into that until I found it IT HAS TONS OF TB HISTORY!) exploring these horse’s stories: http://www.pinterest.com/eventer79/encores-thoroughbred-heritage/

There is a jump Start mare in Palm Springs for sale and they predict Grand Prix potential. (note the word ‘predict’) but she’s nice, too., in temperament and looks.

Her pedigree is interesting in that she’s got more Triple Crown winners in her pedigree than anything I’ve seen, for what it is worth. If I could remember her race name, I could post it.

Palm Springs, CA? Where did you see the ad?

ETA: EventerAJ - that filly is GORGEOUS. swoon! was she as nice to raise as she is pretty?

Oh yes, she was an absolute doll in every way, never put a foot wrong. I did most of her prep work by ponying her, and she was super easy, smart and willing. I used to drool as we’d trot around the field, she’d flick her toes out in a long, smooth stride like a daisy-cutter. I saw her later as a two-year old training at Keeneland, and she remembered me. I whistled and called her name (“Lily”) down the barn aisle, her head swung around, eyes lit up and her ears pricked. Made my heart smile.

An interesting tangential tidbit: Lily was born the same night, about an hour after her best pal, “Daisy.” They were the first two foals I’d ever helped pull out of a mare. (photo, Lily left, Daisy right) Daisy and Lily were bought by the same owner at the yearling sale; Daisy was a little cheaper at $5,500. Her owners kept her name, which became Daisy Devine; she went on to run in the 2011 Kentucky Oaks and won over $1M including the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland. She, too, sold last November at Keeneland as a broodmare prospect, bringing $1.3M.

Daisy is by Kafwain (Cherokee Run) out of a Devil’s Bag mare. (Sales photo) She was also athletic, though a bit more refined, and was a little mentally fragile (her mother was a fruitloop). For those shopping, keep an eye on Kafwain/Cherokee Runs as well. They tend to be a nice type, though not always as consistent as AP Indys.

Enjoying reading about A.P. Indy as I have just purchased one. Tell me more!!

He is one who is making his way into the sporthorse ranks and offspring doing very well it seems. Takes time for the cream to rise.
