Jumper trainer in Seattle area

I am an eventer that lives WAY up in the mountains on the east side. I would like to go over and take periodic jumping lessons with my young ottb to help with getting her started over fences. I’m looking for something very close to I-90, as it will be a long drive already and I’ll be staying on Mercer Island myself likely. I found Thumbs Up Farm. Any other thoughts?

I do have an eventing trainer at my resident barn, but I found it really helpful to spend time with a jumping-specific trainer with my last horse when I lived in a different state.

Sundance Equestrian (http://sundanceequestrian.com/) would be a great option for a jumper barn.
It’s in Woodinville and I remember it was about 30 minutes from downtown Bellevue when I lived there, so not too bad of a commute from Mercer Island.

The training there is excellent and the trainers there would be very receptive to an eventer coming in for some jumper training.

I know not exactly close to I-90 but Denise Youell in snohomish/Maltby is wonderful. Great with young horses and even has eventing experience.

Thanks everyone … I’ll look at the websites, locations of these barns. No comments so far on Thumbs Up?

It’s a great place, excellent instruction… not sure if they have lots of jumpers or if John is still really teaching. You might have a hard time getting lessons from a good instructor right now, most of them are going to be at Thermal until spring.

Denise it great and does the jumpers herself. I highly recommend her.

Thumbs Up is, I believe, one of the most expensive HJ barns in the Seattle area.

I recommend Teri at Phoenix Farm for a nice low key experience with a trainer that has good horse sense.

All the top H/J barns here cost about the same.

I agree with kbrethauer that you may have a hard time pinning down John(Thumbs Up) along with many others as folks start hauling down for Thermal. But I will say that he is one of the few trainers that I make a point of riding with as often as I’m able. I always get something good out of riding with him regardless of whether I’m on a greenie or one of my seasoned horses, and keep threatening him with hauling over regularly or semi-regularly for lessons, though it’s kind of a pipe dream with how busy life is right now! But I think he’s a terrific person to take lessons with and he’s at the top of my list of jumper trainers in the area.

But you’ve gotten some other good suggestions here as well. Tami is fantastic as is Denise, though both might be a little far out from where you’re wanting to be?

Terri really isn’t a jumper trainer… She is great with beginners, but if the OP wants to jump higher than 2’6", then she should look somewhere else.

Jumper trainer

Hello, If you are willing to drive north of Seattle, here’s a couple of names for you.

Lauren Crawford Breum, Hang Time Hunters & Jumpers, off Exit 300 on I5 north of Arlington, or
Scott King (Kyle King’s dad) at HTH Training, in Bow, north of Mt. Vernon.

This would be more north, but Kylie Forst at Crest View would be an excellent fit for you. She’s wonderful with OTTBs, and endlessly patient. She does the A System H/J, but is really open to eventers and haul in riders, as well less traditional breeds. (She has a really darling Haflinger jumper that is starting to go pretty big these days!).

Kylie’s main focus is teaching, and that is what she really loves. It would be a trek, but from what you say, it would be a great fit.

For somebody more south, Shannon Hendrickson would be another great one. She has a lot of jumper experience at many levels, and is very well rounded.

Denise Youell in Maltby is another that would be a great fit.

All of these are with farther north or south from I-90, but the more Eastside barns tend to be on the road a lot more and tend to concentrate more on the Hunters. That’s a generalization, of course, but I do think you might have more bang for your buck a little further a field.

Courtney Palmer at North Star Farm, Arlington Wa… She currently has GP horses and all level of customers. You can look up her bio on North Star Farms website. I also host clinics at North Star, Jan 24 &25th will be Bernie Traurig and March 21&22 will be Jeff Cook. You can find both of those clinics on FB. Good luck trainer hunting!

For jumpers there are quite a few options. Are you looking for a jumper only or eventing coach? Linda Grandia is right up in Woodinville, Hilltop Stables. Jon Elliot is in the Yelm, WA area about an hour south at Aspen Farms. Terrie Hook is about 15 minutes closer than Jon. They are all eventers. Oh, Lindas daughter Anni is near Gig Harbor and she does lesson somewhere out that way, I think monthly?

Teresa Leahy is a wonderful jumper (she does hunters and Eq too) and is good at starting young ones, she is exacting and a good coach. Back Forte in Auburn Wa not too far from Mercer.

Lauren is a fantastic trainer and a wonderful person. She and Scott King are now working together at Hang Time.

Rockmeadow (Where thumbs up is) Is a great facility with at least 3? trainers there. However, It is very expensive, and there can be a bit of a stigma against anything that you got for less than 30k there. Not true with all the trainers there, but there are with a few.
Where are you currently boarding? I know a trainer who travels who does H/J.
