I know this is quite a topical issue and one that people don’t like to talk about, but in situations like this knowledge is power!
I have a very lovely broodmare who has produced three exceptional foals for me, who have sold well and the oldest of whom has just started his competition career very promisingly. This is one of my favourite mares, and there is ongoing demand for her foals.
The problem is that we know she can breed OCD.
While I am not looking for stallion suggestions for this particular mare, what I AM hoping to do is to compile a list of stallions that are known to have GOOD or POOR OC / OCD health, in order to further aid breeding decisions in future. I am looking only at upper-level, frozen semen jumping stallions here.
We are well versed in the nutritional and management requirements that are able to minimise the incidence of OCD and we have had good success with these, but again, if we can reduce the risk further by using stallions that are known for good OC / OCD health this can only be a bonus right?
It is quite alarming how little information there is availble regarding stallions’ OC / OCD health, so any insights that could be provided here would be so appreciated.
