Not a joke…not spam…wondering if anyone else has experienced this before typing out my whole pony sheath drama!!
I knew a pony a while back whose penis had been amputated due to a tumor?
Nope, my pony literally doesnt have one, 10 yrs old n we just found out.
Backstory:
He was born full term to a welsh proven stallion and my mare who was for simplicitys sake, a mutt. An amazing 14.2 chesnut jumper, easy going, great temperment mutt. She’s my profile pic.He came out the size of a springer spaniel, had to milk my mare the first 24 hrs, couldnt stand, couldnt nurse, had to be bottle fed. The next day took him and mare to the vets, mare drugged out of her mind and him wrapped in towels in the front seat. Started nursing when he got to the vets, mainly due to mare being drugged lol n standing still for once. Lived in a stall first 6 months bc his legs were so tiny, had to have straw bc shavings gave him eye ulcers. He had to have braces on his legs, still cannot be rode bc his back fetlock rotates inward, hoof grows dished and frogs have no sulcus, they’re one piece.
Fast forward, lives life in the field, gets shots, farrier, worming, ground manners, thats it. Gains n loses weight when I pulled him onto stall board and muzzled him. Brought him home this yr in October. Field till about 8pm, in till 6am, back out, stall spotless daily. Drylotted now that the weathers turned n the fields are wet.
Noticed him dribbling pee and that he never actually drops it out to pee, the few times ive done more than just rinse him out w a hose, ive had to go elbow deep to get to what I thought was his penis, and it was the size of maybe my finger.
He had some funky discharge n just grossness the other day. Hence vet visit today. Vet sedates, can’t find penis, goes deeper, pulls out sheath, or technically inner sheath, it had almost a membrane over it, still no penis.
Vet gives him some type of diueretic to make him pee while he is there to see if aannyything drops out, he pees, all over his sheath and it sprays out, hence the dribbling apparently. Still no penis. Vet goes in again, pulls inner sheath out, can barely get his finger in the opening, finds a walnut sized what must be his urethra, still no penis.
Asks me how long I’ve had him, was he gelded, did I physically see his testicles removed (yes, super small, fed to the barn dogs) and if he exhibits any mare like behavior, (no, total a hole gelding pony) and proceeds to lift his tail to make sure he doesn’t have any other tiny “slits” for lack of better terminology, under his anal opening. He doesn’t…
So all said and done, my pony never developed an actual penis, must have been part of his birth and dwarfism as we fondly called them, growing issues. Nothing skin wise grew or formed around or over his urethra, no skin, nothing to drop out or even protrude an inch!! Nothing to clean smegma off of, nothing to get a bean stuck in at all. Just a walnut sized urethra, and a sheath that he gets pee all over. No issues till now.
He’s getting urine scald in his sheath, so every other day or so monistat and desitin ointment for life pretty much to help keep it clean, or till further notice. If hes still having issues in a week or so, uniprim will be started and every few months he will get a uniprim regimen just to keep everything on the up n up, no pun intended…since he has nothing to drop down!!!
Seriously…howww does that even happen… only my pony…smdh.
Thats my ponys non penis’d life in a nutshell, which he doesn’t have one of those either!!!

clearly your pony has multiple birth defects given the abnormal legs and overall size. Probably most people will have never seen such a thing as many breeders would have put down such a foal. It would be interesting so see what his DNA looks like and if he has abnormal sex chromosomes. You might need to contact a regional vet school and find out if the theriogenologist ( reproductive specialist) has any thoughts or experiences with something like this
I may call UT just to see what they think, but I am not paying for tests to be done just for the heck of it lol. He is happy sassy and lives a good life right now, this is the only real issue he has ever has since the first yr of his life. He is 12.2 now, so about the size we assumed he would be before he was born anyways. Good idea though!!! It would be very interesting to get a 23 n me type thing done for sure!!!
Your pony is lucky to have you for a mum
My big boy has the nastiest smegma I’ve ever encountered in a sheath, and to keep him comfortable I have to dust his sheath with Lotrimin powder, every day in the summer and several days a week in the winter. If I don’t, he gets insanely itchy and turns himself to a pretzel trying to scratch himself.
Unlike jawa’s instructor’s horse, my guy LOVES me going in there, picking out the chunks, giving him a scritch, and powdering him. I hope your pony learns to appreciate it, too, as it looks like sheath maintenance will be an ongoing thing for you, as well.
You’re a good person to not only have given him every fighting chance of survival at birth, but to keep and love on him even though he’s got a long life ahead of him as a pasture ornament. You and he certainly have some stories!
How in the world was he gelded and no one noticed? I mean, the vet had to be down there to do the procedure. Curious as to why he wouldn’t experience any issues until now. It’s a head scratcher for sure!
Well THIS is getting even more interesting…
Yeah, are we dealing with multiple identities?
This makes 3 different members (at least) that PB is replying from the perspective of. Sooooo…
I spoke to a few therio-lalagists (lol) today, one at va tech, one at msu and one in colorado. They all had never heard of a situation like mine before but all agreed the desitin, and mixing it w vaseline and weekly clean ups w a super gentle soap like a drop of ivory and some excaliber would be best for now. They along w my vet agreed genetic testing would be interesting, but pricey and not needed right now.
He hates it, like chain over the nose and tied tight to the wall w his haynet in front of him and many "Ah, Ah!!! Spirit!!! (His name) NOO!!!, QUIT!!!"s as I do it. But Im sure he will get used to it over time and settle for the hay and being tied lol.
We really do!!! So do me and his mom before she passed, 27 yrs worth!! I started riding her at 6 n bought her at 7, she made it till my daughter was 6.5 so she got to love her as well, so I consider it full circle. ♡♡
Not sure what you mean? I can’t tell thru text if that was sarcasm or just re-iteration lol. But he is well loved and will be taken care of here until he passes when he is hopefully at least 30 n I am 55 or I die. No testing for now since I was told it is quite pricey, but maybe as he ages if anything else comes up :).
You and me both!!! He was gelded, I saw the testicles, they were tiny but there, as far as not noticing the penis, idk. I was slightly grossed out and my son was w me and 8, so Im sure I was explaining to him, telling him to stop messing w the dogs, quit making gagging noises, etc etc.
The vet who gelded him was his sires owner, I called him his grandpa. Maybe at the time the vet assumed he was still developing and growing? We did it early, between 4 n 6 months (I think) so his body would grow more and he could be as tall as he could get. He also had another one to geld right after mine, they were born a week apart. I really dont have an answer for the vet not noticing, and I was 24 w an 8 yr old and ignorant to it at the time I’m sure.
I’m confused too!!! Palm beach is not me… hell my screen name is basically my name, anyone can easily find me on fb with it! I think she meant to put “Like u said, this is not a joke!” ?? The u n the i are right next to each other on a keyboard or phone. She is not me though lol.
This is just me, like i said above, maybe she meant to put “like u said…”
I just posted this because it was so odd and I wanted input or if anyone else had ever experienced a growth defect like this before :/.
