Just not into Rio Olympics...

I am normally a huge Olympic fan-- of all the sports. Winter and summer. But this time around I just am not that interested in the Rio Olympics. I am trying to sort out in my own head why.

I think-- part of it anyway-- is the huge poverty in Rio itself, and the way in which so many people were just shoved aside like they did not matter to make way for the Olympics.

And so many people live in abject poverty in the shadow of this… I don’t know. It bothers me.

Anyone else having trouble getting into the Rio Olympics, when they usually are Olympic fans?

Totally agree with this comment. I have a hard time with the money spent for the spectacle known as the Olympics, when hunger and poverty prevail - and truly the spirit of the Olympics was AMATEUR sport - there are now many paid professionals in both summer and winter sports participating.

Plus I always find it difficult to justify sitting inside watching sports when the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the birds are chirping. We talked about this today - often it’s easier to enjoy the Winter Games when there is little else to do in cold February in Canada, lol.

YES! I normally love the olympics, but this time around I just can’t find it in me to be very interested…

I can sort of identify with those sympathies, but I still enjoy watching. There is so much to be done. I have become so disenchanted with the OC and all the stinking fraud. I feel the same about the UN, and I won;t go into that, but they are supposed to help, and they don’t much.
I do think when Rio was chosen, it was a bit more prosperous. But not enough to pull this off.
For a long time, I have thought government money should be used not so much for circuses, but for bread. Parks and enjoyment are wonderful, but making sure people have clean water, and a safe environment is far more important.

Money needs to be spend on needs and when so much of your population is desperate, probably illiterate, living in such poverty as would sicken most Americans, but instead the greased wheel of graft goes on.

I love our Olympic team, and I am proud of them win, lose or draw. But I prefer to use non government money to support them. I have been reading on other threads about team funding, and how even though some of us want eventing out of the OG, it would absolutely decimate funding. I love eventing, but it is so expensive. I guess X4 with driving. They need to park it in one place, or two, and not have all this endless spending, graft, corruption.

I shall Cease babbling now. As you were

Yes, it is a conundrum, isn’t it. I am wasting too much of the summer days watching tv, and loving it. But Rio is not the only country who will be paying long after the Games are a distant memory. If there was a legacy for the people living in poverty, I’d feel better.

It is winter in New Zealand so I watched the XC online while tucked up in bed with my electric blanket and cat
