I need something to use while doing very beginner shows and schooling XC. i’ve been looking around and seeing the tipperary ones are very popular but not certified. i’m a petite busty woman (size 0/2 32E) with no where near to try on vests. do we think certified vests will be a requirement soon? i am also worried they’re less protective (but more comfy). was also thinking of getting an airowear from the uk and praying it fits.
The Airowear Outlyne is good for the busty. It’s designed specifically for women. I ordered both of mine from the UK (Amira Equi) and I found the size guide to be pretty accurate. I’m very happy with mine.
That said, something lighter and better ventilated would be nice.
I ordered a Harry Hall Hi Flex from the UK. Also made for women but much cheaper (around $100 with shipping). Very similar to a CO in style, I wear the same size as Tipperary (small), but I am far from busty!
ETA: It looks like the Hi Flex only goes down to size small, so probably won’t work for you since I am closer to a size 6 than a 0/2!
Love my Race Safe vest. Bought it after wearing a Tipp for years. It was an excellent upgrade, and I don’t think it was much more expensive than the Tipp. The fit is fantastic, and it’s much more breathable than the Tipp. Purchased mine through Soteria Equestrian and had good customer service.
34F bust here and I really like my Outlyne. I also had good luck using the size chart on Amira Equine without trying it on.
I am also a hard fit, and I have a Rodney Powell. They were comparably priced to the Outlyne when I bought mine, but they seem less popular now and you may have to order overseas. They are BETA certified. The nice thing is that the size is very customable–you order a base body size, and then can specify the length of the back, the length of the front, & the width at the waist.
I just recently bought an Airoware Outlyne vest (also from Amira Equi in the UK). What I like about it is that it comes in a number of different sizes, as well as different lengths, so it’s easier to get something that will fit properly.
I bought it without trying it on beforehand, just going from the measurement chart. The vest only took 2 weeks to arrive from the UK, and was about $100 cheaper to buy (even with shipping) than buying the same vest from US shops. Also, I found that US shops mostly did not carry the Long sizes, and that was what I needed.
Anyway, I’ve worn it twice, and have found it very comfortable, even though it was in the 80s here. It’s also a certified vest.
I bought my niece an $80 Tip knock off and I swear, it is the same as my Tip. I love my Hit Air over a regular Tip vest. I also bought it used off ebay and it has been a work horse.
Outlyne fan here. Accommodates my shape well and is comfortable. And yes, I have crash tested it.
32FF now wearing the Airowear Airmesh. I previously had the unrated Tipp, which was fine, but I got a Medium Tipp to fit my bust and it was too large on the lower half (too wide and too long, and I’m 5’9!). I am really enjoying the shorter back of the Airowear - it never bumps the back of my saddle.
Because the Airowear is built to accommodate a bust, I could size down to something for my waist measurement (going by my bust measurement, I’d wear the L4 Slim, but the L3 fit me better when I tried them both on, since I didn’t have to worry about whether or not I could zip it up over my boobs).
There is at least one Tipperary model that is ASTM certified, the Competitor XP 1036.
The Tipp. 1015 Eventer model is not certified.
i went with the airowear outlyne from amira, fingers crossed it fits and isn’t super hot.
If you decide you don’t like the Airowear definitely look into a Kanteq. It is truly an amazing vest. They’re built for females (even those of us with broad shoulders and B cups ) and are completely custom to you. I just ordered a replacement cover as my zipper broke when someone tried to help me out of it at my last event, and also spoke with Wendy about some fit issues I’ve been having since I’ve put on a couple of pounds since I ordered it. Once I get my new cover and put the whole thing back together she is going to walk me through adjusting it over the phone. I’ve been super impressed with their customer service from the start.
I have that one. LOVE IT! It does not hold heat. I don’t handle heat well at all, and I do fine in it.
