Just tell the kids to use "Perfect Prep"

Speaking of horsemanship being lost in the h/j world, here is the advice I just read Robert Gage giving to a kid on Judge My Ride:

“That’s a big strong horse for a pettite girl like you Alex. That doesn’t mean you can’t ride him, but he needs to be prepared more. I see you already have him in a pelham. I don’t think you will ever be able to ride him in a snaffle. That’s OK. First & foremost, you need control. I get it, that he is only 6 and can get excited in the show ring. But his agressiveness forces you to sit back and ride defensively….almost always pulling. He just never gave you the opportunity to relax your feel on him, and just “hunt”.
I want you to suggest to your coach, (& you can tell him I said so) that he try something called
“Perfect Prep”. It’s a liquid you can buy at most tack stores. You squirt a little into your horse’s mouth about 45 min to 1hr before their class. It relaxes them. Most of the top hunter trainers I know use it, so it’s legal. Just give it a try, and see if that helps him.”

Someone may want to:
1.) learn how to prep a horse without LTD or medication
2.) Read page 11 of the 2014 Guidelines for Drugs and Medications, which specifically cautions exhibitors from using natural or herbal products “to affect a horse’s performance.”

sigh

Hmm. How about we don’t over-horse our riders?

Lol, I commented under the post suggesting that both of them read page 11 of the USEF Guidelines for Drugs and Medication, and included the handy link, and my comment is “awaiting moderation.”

ETA:

Finally figured out how to screenshot it.

I’m not making this up!

interesting. What is LTD btw?

Now they sell the perfect horse in a dosing syringe? AMAZING! Why am I still taking lessons and paying for training rides?

Disgusting, and a perfect example of “what is wrong” with the “industry”.

How about staying home until you can control your horse without drugs? How about riding an appropriate horse if yours is too big / green / forward for your skills? How about IMPROVING your skills as a rider before showing.

Oh but don’t worry - the rider has already reached for drugs to attempt to control their horse before - but for some reason the drugs did not make him “perfect” as promised.

And the video hardly shows a dangerous or out of control animal -just one that you know, drugs might help him win more ribbons.

I…

nope.

got nothing.

You know what would be truly hilarious? To find out that there’s really nothing in the “Perfect Prep” and it’s just the placebo effect making the riders relax and stop pulling.

I agree-nothing about that ride or video made me think OMG this horse is crazy. Looked a little strong at some points but never out of control. Just not going around like an eq machine, in a perfect frame and maintaining a nice even canter (which comes with either drugs or time and training I suppose)

“Longe Til Dead”

LTD= Lunge To Death.

Chemical help is also referred to as " Liquid Lunge Line".

Did the person being judged here pay for that suggestion?

Doesn’t anybody tell the truth anymore when paid to do so? Not like the rider is going to pull horses out of his operation and cost him income.

I agree with meup (must be snowing in Cancun), Wish USEF would deal with this whether the product is “all natural” or not, it is given for a class in a certain time frame specifically to calm. I don’t like that.

Sigh. It is a lot to ask of a horse to do the big eq at their second show, much less expect them to pack around. Some time developing the horse in the 3 foot ring or even with a professional in the open divisions is apparently too much to ask. I actually thought he looked behind her leg for a good part of the trip. When he got heavy, he wasn’t running so much as he was falling on his front end.

I agree. I certainly do not see an animal that is even close to out of control.

I, for one, would love to ride that beast. Won’t say anything else re: horse and rider, since it’s not my place, but shame on RG. smh.

This, exactly. I hope they don’t decide to take shortcuts with this horse by using Perfect Prep when he really doesn’t need it.

Just watched the trip, how sick is it to recommend PerfectPrep for this big lug of a still young horse? It doesn’t need a calming agent, it needs more work, more leg maybe a different bit to carry itself. Not dull it and probably end up with it dragging her around anyway.

Legalities aside, it won’t help with what thus one us doing.

Trust me the powers that be know all about PP, it doesn’t matter any longer because just about every trainer is using it on the Big circuits, it’s not testable and even if it were banned another Prep would come out the next day under another name … This genie isn’t going back in the bottle and really even if someone cared ( which many do) it’s not changing. It is my opinion and mine only that we are entering a saturation point … It is not only NOT expected that someone who sits on a $400,000.00 can ride , I don’t think it’s even disireable to have an actual rider in a barn anymore , they would not be part of the well oiled un-informed machine that is this business . Someone said until the judging changes no changes will be made in the shedrow, Well I guess if they start penalizing boring rounds something might change but I doubt that , it’s just to damn easy to do it this way .

I second whoever said they would love to ride him. He looks to like he’s an amazing athlete.

Shame that the comments were such…

Of course they know but nothing in it is illegal. My problem is it is specifically given to calm before competition and that does seem to go against the spirit of the rule.

Hey, I am no Pollyanna here. Fact I wonder if 90% if the horses that get it even need it. For those that do, I wonder if it really does much except calm the nerves of the rider and make it look like the trainer is doing something.
