Kansas City Barn Recommendations

Does anyone have recommendations for a barn that offers hunter/jumper lessons in the Overland Park/Kansas City area? I’m relocating for work and want to get a good sense of boarding and lesson costs in the area. I’ve recently come back to riding after a brief hiatus, but would characterize myself as an (albeit rusty) confident intermediate rider.

I ride mostly for pleasure and don’t show much, so a showing barn isn’t a must. Rather, I’m looking for a trainer that aligns with my goals and a mature group of fellow boarders. I currently do not own my own horse and would like to eventually purchase, so want to have a firm understanding of the area’s costs so I can budget accordingly. Thank you in advance for your advice!

There are a lot of posts about KC area on here. Peruse those. If you want to PM me I can talk to you about the area further  A lot of us on the boards are in that area. Lots of options within 30-45 minutes or less from OP.

Wood’s Edge at 191st and Lackman. Higher end barn, nice moderate sized indoor, decent sized outdoor. A few of us jump but owner is trying to add more. I like the trainer but I am low level. Also a mile up the road is Brittney Harpool’s place, Olympic Equine Ventures I believe. Active jumping barn.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I’m coming from a small town out of state and felt completely overwhelmed with all the options that KC has (NEVER have had this many options for grocery shopping, let alone boarding and trainers!!!) I will definitely peruse the forums for past posts.

I was hoping to find something within 30 minutes of Overland Park and around $450/month for stall board. Is this a reasonable expectation? I’m honestly not sure what the going rate for 60 minute group lessons are and am sure the options vary widely. I am a low-level rider with little time to show so am mostly looking to just better my horsemanship and riding abilities.

I don’t think you’ll be getting a stall for that price anymore. A few years ago I’d have said yes, but prices have been on the incline from what I’ve seen. Most barns with a trainer and indoor (trust me, last winter was icy as heck so you wouldn’t have wanted to be without an indoor if you want to ride) I’d say you’d be looking at around $500-650 for a stall, obviously more if you want training. Smaller facilities or ones without a trainer you can find $450ish or probably less. For an hour group lesson you are looking at around $35-50 for a group and $50+ for a private. If you have your own horse some places have a bit of a benefit, some are more expensive for a schoolie - but still within the range I posted above.

This is so helpful, thank you!
