Karen O'Connor is Coach to the Mexican Eventing Team.

wasn’t Brian Sabo the chef before?

Yes it was Brian Sabo. Not sure what caused the change. Hopefully KOC can make a positive impact.

Surely she’ll have much to contribute to the riders on the Mexican team…

Good for her to find something to do that doesn’t conflict with DOCs job, and nice to see that she has recovered from her injury.

Actually, it does just that. She has been hired to build a team that will be competitive on the world stage…including competitive against the Americans. So yes, that is a “conflict”.

On a serious note, I think it is fan- f89king- tactic that she (and others) are helping to build the sport in “developing” equestrian nations. I think she is perfect for the job.

The more involved, the better.

I agree with Snoopy. Yes, it is a bit of a conflict of interest, but I don’t really mind it so much because a country that needs the assistance is getting it.

A bit of a change in subject, but was anyone else surprised that Karen was listed as a category A rider, meaning that she can get on any qualified horse and be qualified to ride at pretty much any level (Rolex, etc)? Hasn’t it been a while since she’s really done anything big due to her accident?

I believe the other category A riders are Phillip, Buck, Boyd, MLM, and Will F.

Category riders are determined over a rolling period of time that extends back 8 years. So Karen has competed in enough 4* over that period of time to be considered a Category A rider, regardless of the fact that she effectively stopped competing two years ago. She will continue to be a Category A rider until the rolling period decreases the number of 4*s she completed in that period of time to under the threshold needed for Category A.

Doesn’t mean she should pick up a 3* horse tomorrow and go to a 4* this spring, but yes, she technically could.

Honestly if anyone can herd those cats it would be KOC…
