Kask Helmet Fitting

I’m currently eyeing a used but practically brand new Kask helmet online that is being sold for nearly 50% off. I’m very tempted to blind buy it but I’ve never tried a Kask, although I’ve been wanting one for a long time.

There is just one problem. According to my tape measure at home, my head circumference is 55cm while the helmet is a 56cm.

How do Kask helmets usually fit? Do they run small/large? Is there anything I can do to safely adjust the fitting for that extra 5cm?

Given that any helmet is supposed to be safety equipment rather than a fashion statement, please don’t buy a used one. You have absolutely no knowledge of its previous history. You only have one head, one brain and riding is s risky activity. Buy a new one with the assistance of a trained fitter. Stay safe.

Wouldn’t any damage be pretty easy to spot on a matte black helmet?

Don’t buy a helmet you haven’t tried on, especially a used one. You don’t know how old it is (anyone can say it’s “like new” or “basically new”), how it was stored, someone also could’ve taken a dive on grass or fiber footing and be able to scuff out marks. You also entirely run the risk (and one of the greatest, IMO) that it makes you look like a wenis head and aren’t able to return it - kask is one of those brands that tends to do that. Save your pennies to go try on a new one.

Kask has a few shell sizes and liners that are sized. You could in theory get a 55 liner if the 56 is too big. But they have changed their liner system a few times over the past few years, so if the helmet is older (even if like new), you might not be able to find a liner for it. I personally am not comfortable buying a used helmet, but I did buy an older style Kask at a good sale… the only change was to the liner system. I wanted a couple of additional liners to accommodate different hair and to have an extra when I wash one, and I had some trouble finding the matching liners.

What kind of helmet do you wear currently? Helmet fit is just as much about the shape of your head as it is about the measurement. Kask fits EXTREMELY round, so keep the shape in mind.

I have a year old Kask that I like a lot, but I just got a cheaper Trauma Void Lynx ($200) and I think that fits really well too, and I like it better. So, order a Lynx from Riding Warehouse and try it on. Free returns, and you might like it better.

I wouldn’t buy a used helmet unless I really trusted the person selling it. You can’t always tell damage from outside or whether it was left in hot sun in someone’s car, etc.

I’ve got a fairly cheap Troxel at the moment. It fits great but I’ve needed a new helmet for years now (honestly I need all new gear) :ambivalence:

Trauma Void was another brand I was looking at for a while and have heard nothing but good things about them. Thanks for the tip on Riding Warehouse!

The consensus seems to stay away from the used Kask so I shall heed your warnings fine people.

Good!
