One highlight of the sale was a freudian slip on the vet update board
Hip 2514 had a colt that was “fetal sexting”
no joke. I have a photo to prove it

Precocious little bugger, isn’t he???
Man, the next generation of horses are way more advanced than I thought they’d be.

This $75,000 purchase has me scratching my head. The young agents who bought her Solis/Litt get a lot of press for some high profile horses they have bought. There is never much mentioned of the tons of other people’s money they have spent on horses that were a bust.

On face value paper there is obviously a lot to like about this mare. She is a full sister to mare that produced a top racehorse by Midnight Lute. Which I assume is why she was bred to the same a number of times. Half sister to another mare that produced 2 little stakes winners.
Silverbulletday was one of the best race mares in my life time. So, it is a very sexy page.
But the selling mares produce record is beyond “suspect”. Aborted twice, a yearling by Midnight Lute that died as a yearling, an unnamed 3 and 2 year old by Midnight Lute. A yearling and weanling by Midnight Lute. In foal on a very late cover to a top racehorse that went to stud this year but doesn’t have a pedigree that suggests he may hit. Which is why he stands for $5,000.

I would bet the seller Hill N Dale is/was the owner. They stand Midnight Lute and Secret Circle.
In my younger days of horse trading when I had a much higher risk tolerance I might have taken a chance on this 10 year old mare. But NOT for $75,000.
I know how the game is played, I have known JS at Hill N Dale for years, one of the sharpest tacks in the box. Me thinks this might have been an “advertising sale” purchase. To put boost the “numbers” on his freshman sire’s page.
The same that was done when American Pharoh went through the ring as a yearling. Zayat had a high profile agent “buy” him for for far more money then his pedigree suggested. This sort of play is done all the time to boost a young stallions yearling average, covering sire average, etc.
If stallions were governed by SEC rules and regs this would be considered insider stock price manipulation.
I am not saying this was done. Just saying it is all about how one interprets, extrapolates industry “numbers, statistics”. By and large they should not be taken on face value.

The mare was bred to Secret Circle but she is entered in the sale as “not pregnant”.
Which makes that selling price even more interesting.

Missed that, me bad. Makes it much more curious.
Just checked to see if the 2 year old and the 3 year had been named since the catalog was printed. In case maybe the 2 year old is looking like something special. Neither have been named yet.
Secret Circle, Midnight Lute and the mare are at least partially owned by Pegram. He’s been selling/trying to sell off a Silverbulletday daughter or two every so often the last few years.

Good point. Pegram, JS (Hlll N Dale) and Baffert have been in bed together for a long time.
If this mare did actually change hands Solis/Litt must know something big is on the come or it falls under WTF were they thinking. Or they were buying for a sucker client. Time will tell. It may look like a savvy purchase in a couple of years. When working with other people’s money easy to do.
Pretty hard to get anything over on JS. He hates loosing, especially money.
I am just baffled that Cozzene mare didn’t get any bids today. pregnant to a son of skip away. but then again looks like her offspring haven’t been lighting the world on fire but what a neat, old pedigree to breed from

But if the neat old pedigree isn’t producing much, it doesn’t really help you. It’s been 9 years since that mare has produced a decent horse. She’s about to turn 18 and she’s in foal to an inexpensive unproven sire. So if you want to breed from her, you’ll be getting the first foal by your choice of sire when she is 19 (assuming she gets in foal). That’s a hard sell.
I think the neat old pedigree only is willing to produce what those are willing to invest in a stallion. agree, it is a hard sell. Not to say none of the stallions she was bred to were not worth it but maybe they just were not the right choice. Hard to blame her lack of successful foals specifically on her, but I heard your point.

The beauty of an auction like this is that anyone can participate. Since she was bought back, you can go to the Keeneland website and submit a bid right now.

I’m interested to see if it ends up as an LNJ Foxwoods purchase. They are always willing to take risks if Solis/Litt gives them good reasoning. They also seem to have somewhat figured out the breeding game (as much as possible for newer owners) with good advisers behind them so maybe the thought is that they can make something of the mare getting her away from Midnight Lute and into another farm’s breeding program.
Gumtree, bless your tranparency but we know who you are and where you live. You need to resurrect one of your posts that commented on how the breeding tree (from the people perspective) does not branch much nor does the steeplechase tree. Something about kissing a cousin?
I am good on the mares LOL; merely a dream to start breeding again. One day…

lol yup, thanks for the morning chuckle. I lived in Lex for 20 years.I was still a step child when I moved my tack. Being from Maryland I enjoyed pointing out that we were racing horses when Ky was still a wilderness. The first state to formalize racing and breeding. And the greatest stallion to ever stand in this country stood in Maryland not KY.
I was also told by a VERY predominate member of Lexington’s elite horse traders who I did a fair amount of business with and or for. I would never make it in this town because I was too honest.
I think you are in VA. Glad to see you didn’t use “bless your heart”.
The VA tree doesn’t branch much either.
