Keeping a Training Journal

Whilst I do keep a schooling / training journal I am not very consistent with it and would like to improve. I’m interested in knowing what others do and any tips you may have.

I use Horselogs.com. I have to admit that my entries used to be a lot more detailed than they used to be, but I do enter every day that I either rode or had a lesson or hacked, etc. I also put in there when my horse got shoes, shots, dental, or any other procedure. It’s a very easy system to use and free!

I have a daily desk type calendar and I write a few notes about my ride or anything else important each night before bed. It sits on my dresser so I don’t forget.

I use Equilab.

It’s an app that tracks your ride. After you’ve finished your ride it gives you the option of putting in notes of how the ride went.

I’m rubbish at remembering to write anything down. But it’s right there when I stop the tracking and I’ve found it quick and very easy to drop a few notes in while I’m walking back to the tack up area.

Whenever I take a lesson, I write down everything that I learned. Then I review and use for practice.

I keep a little pocket notebook in my tack trunk, so it’s right there and available. I like my entries to be pretty short and sweet- what we focused on, lessons learned, things to follow up on, etc. Lessons and clinics get more extensive notes.
