Kennel cough...ugh

So my 5 month old has kennel cough. Right now he sounds horrible. And I feel horrible. Now I think my old dog is getting it too. Ugh.

I didn’t take the puppy in until week after symptoms showed up. I feel like an awful owner. I’m usually the paranoid type, calling the vet for everything too. The cough was intermittent and he acted 100% fine. We are surrounded by wild fires, it’s raining ash and at times the sky is thick with smoke with a yellow or orange hue. I honestly thought it was from the smoke. I was coughing occasionally too. Then suddenly he had an extremely bad cough.

He’s on antibiotics and a cough suppressant at night. My older dog will see the vet today too of course (more nervous for her, due to her age.)

How long are we looking at this? It’s pitiful. And no one in our house is getting any sleep. The coughing all night is awful for us all.

I’m trying to keep them resting as much as possible. I’ve never had a sick pup before.

I feel your pain, been there - done that! And yes, the coughing all night was miserable.

Our big dog apparently brought kennel cough home from the pet store. She coughed a few times, like she had something caught in her throat and by the next day it was gone, not one more cough. BUT, she managed to give it to our little dog (who hadn’t been anywhere outside of home), And boy did she have it bad! Antibiotics finally cleared it up but it did take awhile (I don’t remember how long it took for the coughing to stop, this was about two years ago). This was our first experience with kennel cough too.

Hang in there, it will go away. Jingles for a rapid recovery 🐶.

That’s how it started, just a hacking cough but very occasionally. Now it’s all night. Right now he’s all fired up, so hopefully the antibiotics are kicking in a little. I know night time might still be rough though!

Most of the time kennel cough lasts about 2 weeks. Though I had one patient that had it for 6 months. We did a trachea wash and it came back as horse tells so we had the right diagnosis, just a tough case of it. That’s very rare.

@sockmonkey sounds about right. The puppy seems better after two weeks. Now are older dog has it. I hope it runs it’s course soon. It’s definitely rough.

I’m going to the doctor today but I swear I have it. Lol. I got sick nearly same time as the puppy. No one else in my family is sick either. (Covid negative)

Sorry what is “horse tells”?

Spell check takes over. I don’t read as I type. Horse tells is Bordetella.
