kennel floors?

I have had a small doggy boarding business for some time but have never had actual kennels. They’ve always stayed in my house and it’s worked out fine, but of course I have to be very careful about the the dogs I take for that reason. Now we are ordering kennel panels which will be set up in a designated room off of our shop. It already has cement floors and a drain, it’s own french door entrance and a window. The 2 kennels will be large- 6 X 6’ X 8’H- but I want to figure out some way of making the floors a bit more comfy for the dogs. Would mats be an option or is there something else better? Obviously it would have to be able to be hosed down, but I’d prefer something lightweight that I could easily remove or move around for cleaning. Indoor/outdoor carpet? Ideas or experiences welcome!!

I’ve worked in a few kennels…

You not only want something that can be hosed down but something that can be scrubbed between occupants. Indoor/outdoor carpet cannot - well, you can try, but chances are some pesky bug (kennel cough etc) or dirty/mud/feces/urine/hair can get embedded in it.

Putting down beds and/or blankets is often problematic. You have the constant source of laundry due to accidents and/or hair but (especially if you do not know each and every dog personally) chances are you’ll run into some chewers. While they are distructive, they can also be a huge health concern if Fluffy decides to eat the pieces he has so carefully ripped off.

Concrete is a good answer. You might consider sealing/painting it. For relief on joints, you could put a Kurunda cot in each run. They can be fully scrubbed and disinfected. There are different styles and studiness levels. (ex: super chewers or not) and a variety of sizes.

Sealed concrete is a good idea…and my clinic uses old non-slip rugs that they toss towels and blankets over…nothing stuffed or fluffy. The dogs rarely ever destroy the towels or rugs but if they make a mess, easy enough to toss in the washer. Plus you can always go out and buy 100 more, towels at the dollar store are pretty cheap. The zoo I work with gets many of their towels and sheets donated from hotels in the area–you could ask ones around you what they do with the ones they will no longer be using.

Another option is leave the floors concrete and then maybe invest in some raised beds–the PVC pipe ones with canvas that can be easily hosed and disinfected but give the dogs a space away from the floor.

We use mats on dogs with pressure sores but htey are a mega PITA and are generally porous so they retain all the bacteria and need to be mega disinfected. We have those floor mat holders you see at carwashes installed on the outside of the building and will slide mats up into them to spray them thoroughly with kennelsol lemon quat or synphenol or whatever your medium, and be left to dry.

I’ve seen stall mats used frequently. You could get the lighter weight trailer ones so they could be moved/cleaned more easily.

Kurunda beds are also super popular.

Another vote for sealing the concrete. Once the smell of urine gets into unsealed concrete it’s hard, hard, hard to get out.

I have kennel runs in my basement for my jacks (see how I know about smelly concrete  ? ) and I have cots for my dogs that EARN THEM. If you pee on it, you get a plain crate pad. You chew on it? You keep it until it’s totally destroyed and then you get a crate pad. Poop on it? Well, that’s your problem!

My best friends family owns a kennel so I’ve been working in one for a long time - another vote for sealed concrete - its also easier to squeegee dry when you hose out a run (i would also make sure you have a convenient draining system). Also easier to disinfect. We have kuranda pet beds in every run because they are easy to clean, dogs seem to like them, and they aren’t the easiest to destroy. That being said, bored dogs can destroy them :]. If dogs don’t seem to use their kuranda beds we will put in extra bedding - blankets or cloth beds. We get donations for bedding from people/places and wash dirty bedding everyday, we’re usually doing laundry all 12 hours we’re open but thats often for at least 100 dogs (not all of them have extra bedding though). The point is, dogs enjoy blankets, etc, but its hard to manage doing laundry and having enough bedding to keep supplying it. We also put matts down for some dogs (not all), usually for larger dogs that don’t like the kuranda beds and have issues walking on the sealed concrete. We use matts with hollow holes in them- they are easy to blast clean with a high pressure hose / disinfectant and hang up to dry.

Good luck!

Whatever you do, make sure its easy to mop / scrub. Cement floors are so hard to clean and in my experience, start to smell after awhile. Where I work, dogs are let out 5-6 times a day, but a few still have accidents and I notice on our cement floors it is so much harder to clean up and they do hold the smell more than the non-cement floors we have.

Vinyl beds. They are pretty much thick foam covered with vinyl so they are easy to disinfect/clean. Humane society has tons of them, the dogs are then able to get up off the floor and sleep on a mattress type bed…thats ok to pee on!
