One race does not a stallion make. See Mine That Bird etc… This horse does not have a stallion’s pedigree. ETA It has been pointed out to me that he was a gelding when he won the Derby

We’ll see, however I very much doubt that many mare owners will be interested. I think the lack of interest will have nothing to do with his behavior after the race. It will be because of his questionable, close line bred breeding and the necessity that most mare owners will need a mare that will be an out-cross. Difficult to do these days.

I know that the breeding on Rich Strike is drawing a lot of commentary, given the inbreeding. But he was bred by Calumet Farm, who presumably have good experience and sense in the breeding choices. So why would they have opted for such close lines coming together?

No one bred to Mine That Bird because he was a gelding…

Could someone explain the betting please.
So the odds were 80-1, does that mean for every dollar bet you get 80 back? Sorry I am from out beyond nowhere, never even been to a real race.

Calumet of today is not the Calumet of the past.

In 2012 it was bought by billionaire Brad Kelley.

They have been doing some unconventional things, to say the least. I’m not sure if the breeding decisions have been influenced by Kelley or his managers, but they certainly have done things, er, differently…

I know it is the Washington Examiner but this is a trick! How a 3 yo could have almost died in a barn fire 6 years ago. :joy:.

I know very little about racing but after watching the replay several times, it didn’t seem to me that the 2 front runners, Zandon and Epicenter, didn’t seem to be running out of gas. Their jockeys seem to have rated them well, keeping them out of the blazing pace Summer is tomorrow was setting. Rich Strike just came up and flat out ran them. I think the Preakness will be interesting.

I’ve looked at the video a few times. I don’t see the horse getting his face punched. Slapped, yes. Punched, no.

RS’s behavior was dangerous. It needed to be corrected as quickly as possible to keep everyone safe. Was it pretty? No. Was it abusive? No. It was the level of corrective action that was required in that situation.

What would you have done to protect everyone involved? Whisper in his ear?

I do not think Rich Strike should be added to the list of Calumet-bred Derby winners. The farm name is the same as it was in its heyday, but only the geography is the same.

Reminds me of the fable of the axe George Washington used to cut down the cherry tree–“Yes, this is the original axe. Of course it has had two new heads and three new handles since then, but it is George Washington’s axe”.

A good example, however, would be California Chrome. A terrific horse who outran his breeding and received very little interest from the breeders. Now in Japan, hope he has success there.

I do not think anyone would have noticed he was being a jerk if his level of jerkness did not raise to the point of his outrider having to remind him that manners are needed. Then certain people (general) get their panties in a wad because this big mean man hurt the poor horsey and we have to start a whole discussion about it.

The race was amazing. I think everyone loves it when the underdog wins.

I think we will see a lot more of Charge It later in the year and as a 4 year old if he stays sound. He is just a bit too green right now but loads of talent. I think he might be the Gun Runner of this generation. Good at 3, a bit inexperienced, but better at 4.

I think he is one of the best looking horses of this crop and he is a stunning mover. Count me in as the biggest Charge It fan!!

Rich Strikes Owner appeared on Today this morning and said three things; he appreciates the outrider, and feels terrible that his horse bit the man so badly on his leg and arm, and second, he feels that the outrider saved his horse from injury, in case the Jockey had come off. Finally, he stated that his horse was essentially “still racing” at that point, and was determined to beat the outrider. Hence, the aggression.

Late here but King Ranch bred and raced TBs back in the day. They bred, owned and raced Assault (Bold Venture)who won the Derby in 1946…and the Preakness…and the Belmont. He was the 7th Triple Crown winner. Trained by Max Hirsch, ridden by Eddie Arcaro.

That shows what a good owner he is! I am so glad he spoke in defense of the outrider!

I had to watch the race video 10X in a row to finally be able to catch all the action in that race!

Wow.
