Kentucky Derby 2022

In this video (shown above, also) about 40 seconds in, the groom says several times, ‘Please don’t make no noise, please no noise, etc.’ (Still ramped up?)

As to the jockey, Sonny Leon, I heard the commentators say he has/had been the leading rider at Mahoning Valley for the past 4 years. NOT a nobody among his peers:

As for Keen Ice, like a LOT of good stallions, the percentage of big-time race winners is much smaller than actually the numbers bred:

This is not the first time that you have demonstrated your resentment of wealthy owners in horse racing and it seems a little over the top to me.

Horse racing is known as the “sport of kings”. Well bred horses are expensive. Training and keeping horses is expensive. Breeding horses is expensive.

It’s great when a relatively inexpensive horse like this one, or Zenyatta, or someone’s home bred does well, but it is the exception.

I don’t understand what you want from racing. If a wealthy person wants to become an owner and get into racing why shouldn’t they buy a high priced horse? Why does this upset you? It doesn’t guarantee a win and it helps the bloodstock industry.

The facility starts babies. Those babies aren’t funneled into his racing stable automatically.

I don’t think he won the Derby.

Protonico 10K

I don’t know if this is who you were thinking of, but Funny Cide was a gelding who won the Derby and the Preakness. He worked according to the Kentucky Horse Park site as a track pony for a short time after his retirement.

Protonico is standing for 10k.

Apparently I have imagined the Derby horse that was gelded. Of the three I thought it might be two were geldings when they won, and the third is standing for $3,500 in Pennsylvania.

There are a number of derby horses who flunked out of their stallion gig, but none in recent years that flunked so badly they were gelded because of the quality of their offspring.

War Emblem was gelded so he could be repatriated, and we all know his story. Funny Cide & Mine That Bird were geldings when racing.

Horses like Grindstone and Giacomo flunked so badly they ended up in Oregon. Plenty of others went overseas.

Funny Cide was a pony horse for a while but he was a gelding so no stud career for him regardless.

I wasn’t thinking of War Emblem, bless his heart. The few horses he sired did very well. It must have been frustrating for his owners.

Yes, my imaginary horse I thought was gelded due to lack of interest by mare owners.

The outrider’s job is to keep everyone safe, he would not be fired if he let the horse go just like he won’t be fired for not letting him go. Now hopefully everyone will let this topic go.

I just saw Funny Cide at the Kentucky Horse Park last fall. He still looked great.

….ummm….snaffle 1987, in your post upthread from a little while ago (few hours), you might want to go back and edit the term breeder to bleeder…if thats what you meant. Haven’t figured out the edit on this new format, rarely feel the need to anyway but this begs a comment

As it is, you state RS “is a prolific breeder” . Did you mean “is a prolific bleeder”? If so, didn’t hear him described as a “ Claimer who is a prolific bleeder”, is he? Its the post where you talk about Covid and Baffert and how much the sport needed a great race.

BTW, Charismatic was also an early underachiever and ran as a Claimer, its not unique. Course he did breed but dont know if he had a bleeding issue.

Interesting, thanks.

I wonder how much he could ahve done in the breeding shed if not shipped to Japan?

No, but it’s not like he only has two horses and won the Derby with one of them, or anything like that.

Are you thinking about Lava Man? He’s actually a stable pony for Doug O’Neill’s barn. He also has his own FB page “I am Lava Man”. According to Lava Man’s posting he decided to give the humans a little excitement, got loose, and led them on a merry chase after him. Apparently, he likes to get out, and sample the feed bins.

Yes, met them both! Grindstone died in March. Both stallions have had a nice life here in Oregon.
